rear brake disk life

Post by barrioplano »

After only 20.000 km (13.000 mi) the disk of my rear brake has gone below its mnimum thickness and requires replacement. Is this normal?

no expert here, but does sound excessive.... i take it you bought the bike new?

mine did approx 25k miles. fronts about 20k.

(dont buy new ones from Mr Honda...way too much money - plenty of after market companies at over half the cost)

Yes, I forgot to mention the bike was new. Also, I used Carbone Lorraine brake pads (anyone having experience here...?).

I'm running wavey discs front & rear, both on CL pads... seem fine, good feel, plenty of stopping power.

You mount CL? Really? then I am out of ideas about why my disk lasted about half yours!
Thanks for the reply anyways,

Using the rear brake too much? Humm.. most of the time I drive rather gently (my rear tyre lasted 20.000 km and my mileage is 12 km/l [32 mpg], driving exclusively in Tokyo) so it seems unlikely that my driving style is halving 8O the life of my rear disk.
Maybe the CL pads were too hard on the Honda stock disk, while Essexbloke wavey disk could take them better... :confused
Anyways it is rather disapponting to have to replace the rear disk, which is almost useless anyways

I never use the back brake other than slow speed stuff and to sqwat the back end by trailing it into a corner used to use it to back it in but learnt thats not always very clever but it did look the dogs right untill it spat me off one time .Does sound pretty excesive wear that though sure your not resting you foot on it or its not been binding

err..........

am i missing the point.........no-ones mentioned the joy of engine braking.... almost the biggest single advantage of riding a twin....

i virtually never use the rear brake, (unless doing silly u.turns in the road), otherwise, i leave most of my braking to the engine, & a big squeeze of front...

whether it's summit to do with the waveys? i dunno, but no complaints here....

I use the back brake loads, just to scrub off that bit of speed before a bend and settle the bike, which the fronts don't do so well. Must get some new fron discs though as I have a slight warp (in the disc, not speed you understand, but humour possibly)

I'll get me coat...................

I replaced my front discs on my GSXR at 110,000 kms and they were well under min thickness.

Yellafella, mine are exactly the same after fitting Ferodo sintered pads - apparently theharder compound exposes slight irregularities in the disc - add braided hoses and you feel the pulsing through the lever etc. Busters are doing replacement discs for £99.99 each, but I can always think of something better to spend £200 on. Like petrol!
