Mirrors

Post by Stratman »

Whilst I had got used to them these last 12 years  I thought I might extend them. Rather than buy R1/R6 ones, I thought I'd have a go at the stock ones first. Apologies for some out of focus pics.

Image

First I covered the shaft with masking tape and marked the mid point in the mirror shaft before taking the hacksaw to them

Image

Now in half

Image

I then held each half in a clamp and used the drill press to drill an 8.5mm hole in each half. I then tapped a 10mm thread into each

Image

I used a 10mm bolt with the head cut off and made a spacer with some alloy tube from B&Q

Image

Took a bit of positioning, but I then screwed them together really tight and used threadlock for studs on them

Cleaned them up and applied plastic padding

I slid on some 25mm heatshrink and shrunk it!

I will use some tyre black on the heatshrink as it is a bit grey - but still looks better than those mirror extender things. Time will tell if VTR vibration makes them fall apart, in which case I will get some R1 types after all!

Brilliant, wish I'd thought about doing that.

Don't know yet - been too bloody wet to find out :( but I'm sure they will be better - TBH I managed with the originals for years but I felt that an extra 1" would improve my ride

Looks a fantastic factory finish job that, nicely done!

something i might have a go with as the extenders look fiddler but i would like the little extra width

Just a brief update - went out a while back - they are a bit better but I did have my big Goretex jacket on which is bulky. They didn't snap off anyway!

They look great and are a testament to your handy work!

I, however do not posess the skills/ patience to do that, it would look a dogs dinner so i may still go down the R1 mirror route!
