High Milers ???

Post by leevtr »

Anyone here runnung a high mileage Storm. Under 50k doesnt really count, I'm talking towards 100k or beyond.

Also, what problems, if any, have arisen due to the mileage ?

Just wondered :?:

If I was buying a bike, anything over 30,000 I would consider high. For real high mileage 70's upwards I would expect to buy it real cheap and replace the engine sooner or later. Storms engines can go on for 100,000 plus though. I think hawk over the ponds bike is still going strong with over 100,000.

When I saw the title I thought it may involve aeroplanes.

That seems to be the way in this country. Like you say, in the US theres a lot of bikes with huge mileage on. The only reason I'd be wary of a big mileage bike, would be that I'd not know how it was maintained or treated.

Depends on how many new engines it's had.... Trigger's broom.

Mine's on its fourth, or fifth, I've lost track.

The clocks have only done 70,000 k, though, so they're still relatively new.

Don't really matter, as it only shows when you turn the key to "on", and you're already gonna ride it then.
Just set the mileage display to miles since last fill of fuel and relax :cool2

These engines are really understressed, as long as it hasn't been run low of oil anything goes.
I've stripped high mileage ones and still been able to see the machining marks on the pistons....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Storm has done about 35,000, my Suzuki GT750 which has not been used or run for quite a few years has done 84,000 so that's my high miler

Mine had about 150,000 km on it before I had it rebuilt (the first time.... sigh). The tech who did the rebuild said he couldn't believe how good it looked inside. It wasn't burning any oil at the time and always started right away. Change the oil regularly, let it warm up properly before leaning on it, address the weak points (ie. replace the R/R, either mod the CCTs (with stoppers) or replace them with manual units) and you should be good for a long, long time......

I knew someone would come up with that

Mines always on trip anyway, and done stupid low mileage. I was just curious as to what's out there, seeing as most sportsbike riders in this country are of the opinion 20,000 is high mileage.

20,000 is high mileage.
Ay, 8O 20,000 is low! with 20,00 the engine is pretty much just run in, had it's first major service, and worked a bit so all components should be free'd up and working nicely. I would say 20,000 is in the prime of it's life. Or you could say it's in it's teenage years so behaves like an animal, full of energy and wanting to let rip

If it's looked after it should see very high miles, what kills bike engines are short blasts where they don't warm up as they wear like mad. Just look at the average Beemer GS, and lets face it these are older style motors.

Hence the reason Marty's old engine burns so much oil  :p

There used to be a forum,VTR registery, now gone, that invited you to list your mileage and any problems with your VTR.

The record was one in the states with something crazy like 500,000 miles on standard ccts quite a few had 300,000miles and 100,000 wasn't worth mentioning.

I was looking for info when I was looking to buy mine and figured that 8000 miles was rather tame...

Unless they have been really abused Most Honda engines should clear 100K miles no problem, I knew a guy who had clocked a Hornet 600 and clocked a 900 Hornet and the bikes were still like new, as long as you do oil changes, let the engine get to running temp and then give it 5 mins for the whole engine to warm up, dont pull loads of wheelies then they should be fine.

The only problems I have had with engines ( touch wood ) are Yamahas, chocolate clutch and gearboxes on the those buggers, the speed triple I had were well known for exploding clutch and 2nd gear problems to, but that was the first of the proper speed triples ( T509 ), they vastly improved on the 1050s in every way.

Just a thought whilst we're all thinking about high miles and CCTs. I know quite a few Vara owners who's bikes have done well over 100,000 miles on standard Honda CCTs. Perhaps Storm CCTs fail due to lots of low milage runs and not getting enough oil splashed onto them? Ok, the Vara is in a lower state of tune but there has to be something in it?
