its a 50/50 tbh
powder coating will bake the wheels so i would assume a harder finish, but a good painter and time to cure and i doubt you'll have any problems with that either, painting gives you a much wider choice of colours, but seen as you want silver, that ain't really a problem. i've painted a few wheels myself and achieved a pretty decent level of finish. personally i'd probably choose p/c because the wheel will be blasted first, so the finish should be spot on, i reckon you'd have to take the bearings out tho, i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong, and i usualy am....... :(

You can leave the bearings in if you put a bolt through with large enough washers on, so that they cover the bearing surface, but why not just put in new ones anyway, while it's off the bike?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

What if you want bare metal - are they lacquered/protected by a clear process?

Done both more times than I can remember, I always paint now.

There are many, many, many arguments for both, but if you chip a powder coated wheel (and they do chip) it'll be a nightmare to get it redone as you have to remove the coating, with paint you can get it done in a day or two, modern paints are very, very good, chap here in Plymouth does it so cheap I feel I'm ripping him off every time I get a wheel done.

Why would you want you wheels clear coated. Why not use a good quality detailing product like Armourlite or a Ceramic shield. A Ceramic shield bonds itself into to the paint molecules and is as hard if not harder than paint. Speak to Chric for some advice on a good product to use. It will be loads cheaper than powdercoating.

I reckon silver metal wheels would look neat on a black storm with red detailing (decals and maybe calipers and red belly pan). But then my skills at design etc may be wanting. My back wheel I got from Marty is part silver already and does look good, so I thought I'd go the whole hog.
