Asteroid Heading for Earth

Post by VTRDark »

Don't panic it's not that big and will be passing close to Earth (240,000miles) so we may be able to see it. Anyone with a good par of binoculars or telescope will most certainly see it if they aim in the right direction, or you can watch it live online.

It will be passing on Feb 15 at around 7.24pm GMT. Lets hope it doesn't hit any of our satellites.

Then come the end off the year we are in for even bigger treat. A biblical size comet the size of the Moon will pass close to our Sun and will be big enough to see with the naked eye. I'm really looking forward to that one. :biggrin

Don't mock. A lot of people suffer from asteroids.

Seriously though, do you remember Giotto (I think)? Hung in the sky in the winter of something like 1992/3 for what seemed like ages. That was, as the U.S. citizens say about anything, AWESOME!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

O dear what have I started. Bruce......

The only ones I have seen before are the small ones that fly past at speed (shooting stars) and a couple of meteor showers. It's times like this I wished I didn't live in a light polluted city. The best view of the night sky I have ever had was when I was out in the middle of the Red Sea. It was like a blanket of stars. Mesmerizing.

It''s passed us now. It did come very close to a Satellite. They said (quote)we don't think it will hit it(unquote)

Found a nice app that one can download. It can either be viewed online or downloaded as an application to your computer. Basically it's a live simulation of all things Nasa Ie missions, asteroids etc. You can click on things like Saturn and the camera takes you there. Then click on Cassini and you can see the view of Saturn that cassini sees at this current time. It's pretty cool, so off I go to explore the solar system.

Here's the link to it.
