Not necessarily a twist and go, I specified a 250 as at least then they can keep up with the flow on motorways  and realise how truly vulnerable we are. To other motorists and to the elements

How kind of you :P
Good lad, I knew you would get it researched. You follow the same logic process as my kids when faced with a question.
1) ask me what the answer is
2) google it and cut & paste into whatever they are working on
3) and if none of that works then they might get a book out and do proper research

it's the lying, injustice and apparent double standards about what constitutes an offence that took a decent bloke from the world

On the phone thing - no amount of education and training will help because the use of one is driven by sheer selfishness, sat in the car, not giving a sh1t about anyone around them and thinking the road is there for them. I'm normally a pretty liberal, trusting and understanding kind of person but on some things it is so obvious what the problem and here it is costing lives. There needs to be severe penalties - minimum prison sentence if a phone is involved - and the phone companies should be able to provide tech that shows when a phone is used bluetooth and more besides. Better still ban them - if BP and other companies can get by without their people using them then I'm sure a lot of the selfish people can.

on the sibject of vulnerability Volvo designed a car where the driver was right at the front and in a glass/clear bit, totally 'exposed'. They said it was the safest car ever as it made the driver realise what they were in control of, rather than protecting the driver inside a killing machine they said the car should be designed so it protected everyone else. They also said it would never succeed.

I,ve heard a similar theory expounded as BVG just mentioned. people are allowed not to wear seatbelts but a foot long (30.5 cm,s, virt  ) spike has to be mounted in the centre of the steering wheel . people then concentrate on not driving into other things.

I thought it was 30.48?

12 * 2.54 = 30.48

I do know imperial units, why does everyone underestimate me :(

He holds his ground and gives as good as he gets which I like.
and the phone companies should be able to provide tech that shows when a phone is used
They do when there are accidents. It wss shown that that Helicopter pilot that crashed in Vauxhall recently that he was on the phone texting at the time and he was also on the radio to the control tower at Westland heliport. All at the same time. :eek2

Good point about the Petrol tankers not needing phones. We don't need them either. We got along fine before they where invented. But there's still accidents from other things we do while driving. There's already too many restrictions, laws, rules and regulations in place and things there just to make money out of us. Why will they chuck someone in jail which costs money when they can give people fixed penality fines. And keep the fines low enough where people will go and create the offence again and again. £££££££ It's not all about road safety anymore, that's just their reasoning behind it.

i agree that all drivers except the disabled should have to spend 12 months on two wheels as this alone is invaluable experience that all bikes have .
i spent 5 years riding all year round and it made me a better rider/driver .
i choose now to only ride in the better weather as i kept getting knocked off in winter .

I'm not using it as a weapon against you or anyone, you've done it and for that I respect you. What I mean is that there are a lot of riders who have never tried to ride in anything except blistering sunshine.. People who love bikes, but if they have that much love for biking yet refuse to do it in such weather conditions - not even once - then what hope have you got with getting someone who doesn't even like bikes in good weather to do it? :(
