Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped...doh. Did I do something wrong? Gonna have to set the valves etc. I expected this to be an easy job!
Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
What did you renew with, manual, Autos or stop modded auto's. Did you hear the chain slip? do you now which cylinder it is? you either did not have the timing lined up right when removing the old ones or did not lock off the old ones before doing a stop mod.
Either way your going to have to remove you cam cover/s. You should have taken Benny up on his offer LOL You don't have to set the valves as you describe it, but you do need to get the crank and cam sprockets lined up. Start by removing the rear cam cover, set the timing as in the knowlagebase, so cams will be pointing upwards and inwards. Then check the alignment with the marks on the cam sprockets. Take some pictures and get back to us to advice on the next step.
If everything is OK there, then it will be time to move onto the front.
Now go sit in the corner with Scotty and count from 10 backwards and shout Argh, Armageddon

ah you plonker - told you fetch it round here lol!!!Image wrote:Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped...doh. Did I do something wrong? Gonna have to set the valves etc. I expected this to be an easy job!

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
Not done stop mod (don't know how) so just put in new cct's to make me feel comfortable that at least I've got new ones in (i.e. maybe shiny new ones more reliable for a while).
Yep, checked timing was lined up but it slipped somehow. I've removed the cam cover and set the timing. All well there. Checked valve clearance simply because the cam cover was off so took the opportunity while it was there. All ok now but why did the timing slip? What did I do wrong?
And yep, should have got help but didn't want to be a pain!

Front or rear cylinder?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Hope you have it fixed, you don't want to start the engine if you are not sure the timing is correct. Did you put the metal dome ends off the old CCTs onto the new ones, I can't remember if new ones come with them fitted?

Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
When undoing the two bolts that hold the cct in the engine, it's best to do a little at a time alternating from one side to the other rather than undoing one all the way then moving on to the other one.All ok now but why did the timing slip? What did I do wrong?
Because often the cct sticks to the gasket they need a tap to break the seal and loosen them off. This is best done before both mounting bolts are fully undone, so just loosen off each bolt slightly, give the end of the cct a tap with you ratchet handle or something to break the seal and then loosen off the the rest of the way, still alternating from side to side. This ensures that they come out squarely and any slight tension that is on the chain will loosen off slowly as you undo them Rather than (for want a better word) snap back and jump under the possible slight tension still left on the chain.
I made the same mistake on my front. Rushing things I undone both mounting bolts all the way, the cct itself did not move and was stuck to the gasket. I broke the seal and the cct sprung off as the chain was under slight tension still even though I had set the timing set to TDC on the compression stroke. The timing only has to be slightly out to leave some tension and it's not easy lining it up spot on by eye through the hole in the cover, also because of wear and tear and slight chain stretch, one can have it lined up at the crank and the markings on the cam sprockets could be out by 1/2 tooth or something.
It's a shame these bikes don't have slotted cam sprockets.

Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
OK, I cheated, took it to a bike garage to finish off. Didn't want to chance my engine on my 'Bodget & Scarper' expertise. I can see by the posts above that I took on more than I could chew ref the cct and timing. I've put in brand new cct front and rear to minimise the chances of the dreaded cct ping. Someone though has said they go random of mileage and a brand new cct has as much chance of going than an old one. Hope that's wrong or the whole thing was a waste of time!
Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
P.S. the new ones are the normal spring ones and not maual or stop-mod. Have I wasted my time or are new ones less likey to go?
Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
My understanding is that the Honda Autos can go at any time, whether they are old ones that have been on the bike for years or new ones which have been stored on the shelf for an indefinite time. I would think the minimum you would want to do is the stopper mod given the amount of stories/information which is contained on this forum and the amount of advice which is available from members who have suffered the CCT curse. If you choose to tread your own path then good luck to you my friend!

Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
My comments echo what Kev just said. Do the stopper mod on the new ones and then we can all relax

Re: Renewed camchain tensioners and the timing has slipped
I wouldn't say you wasted money buying new ones but you have wasted money getting a garage to fit them. Take a little ride out over to benny's mate, get them sorted.

Yes he's a great guy very helpful sorted my Stick coils and other stuff out as I'd never done anything with wires other than plug them together at the time.
I would sooner rather than later either get to martins and him talk you through and show how to do the stop mod on yours or just get some Manual ones and get them put in. He will be a dam sight quicker and more cost effective than a garage.
Plus engines are getting rare on ebay now only ones I've seen recently have been from the rip off breakers that want stupid money, so best to look after yours as if they go it's Gona cost ya!

Stop mod it is then!
Looks like I'm going to have to do some serious butt licking to someone.
