Re: My Tuono Thread

Had the hampshire bikers meet last night. Forgot to post it, sorry. Anyways, I wheeled the 'T' out about an hour before setting of. Get kitted up and hit the magic button and it just kept turning over. I then though "sh1t, I forgot to turn the cold start level" Anyways, turn it up. Still nothing. I hadn't had the battery on charge either (highly recommended with these). I still couldn't get it started.

So this afternoon, in amongst the squits, I stripped the bike down. Tank off completely, air box off, plugs out. They were wet. A sign of flooding which I figured was the case. I wanted to check them anyways.

Cleaned up a few bits an pieces whilst I was in there. Throttle bodies, cylinder heads etc. Puts it all back together. Hit the button. Same again. FFS!!!

Put the bike away, totally pissed off.

Checked out the net and found a really good video. Can't find the fooker now but basically it said, as I had flooded it, not enough air was getting in so I had to start it with the throttle held 3/4 open.

I thought "Nah, can't be that easy!" It fooking was. Learned something new today

Boom! Into life! Just need to finish putting it back together so it's ready to ride. I'm glad I'm ironing out the issues and building an understanding of the 'T' Hopefully it'll all be good by March 23rd

That's better. :biggrin

Glad you got it sorted. Seems strange holding the throttle open worked. I would have thought that would put more fuel in and flood it more. Also not very good for a cold engine if it suddenly kicks to life at high revs. I would have just walked away and gone back to it a bit later. But why is it flooding. Did you give it too much choke.

I was thinking about you earlier (No not like that  ) I was reading through some carb sites and came across R&D flexjet mixture adjusters for the DRZ.

lol @ choke. Its FI Carl dude. There is a cold start lever (choke equivalent?) which I now know you must use to let air in whilst the fuel pump pumps in the fuel. All new to me. If you don't use it, it pumps fuel in but no air gets in. Opening the throttle opens the throttle bodies and lets more air in I guess?

Correct me if I am wrong though.

Derrr, offcourse it is, what was I thinking.

Not sure whether the throttle would put air into it though, seems weird. I would have thought it was fuel so as you twist the throttle the electronics (map) can determine how much fuel to add according to you throttle position and revs. The air will be fed in from outside and there's probably a sensor to tell the electronics (map) how much air it's getting to add to it's calculations. The cold start would just be like a flap that opens and closes or similar. It opens up which leans it off by adding more air and probably helps with the atomisation of the mix to get it to ignite. A hot engine wont need as much because it's hot which helps it burn.

Good vid  I like the graphics they used in that. Well I wasn't far off then. So by opening the throttle it's telling the tps and other sensors to get the fuel pump to squirt for longer into the injectors.

And wasn't it the fuel pump wiring you had problems with when you first got the bike. One of the weak spots on these bikes.

Yeah, that's sorted now though.

Quote off another Tuono owner

The first day after I had the bike three years ago did exactly that, hit the starter before the fast idle. Floods it instantly. Tried all sorts no luck, called the RAC. By the time they come it then started first time annoyingly.

Started every time since first prod.

Last week, my friendly mechanic had the bike overnight to do the MOT for me. Yes guess what, hit the starter before the fast idle and you can guess the rest

True. Oh and it's turn the fast idle before hitting the button. (in case you get to go on one:P)

Hell yeah. I can't wait to get some PR3s on her. I just don't get on with dunlops in the wet/cold. This was re-enforced last night on the DRZ when trying to spin the bike round on the throttle in the car park and it ended up spitting me off. Funny as fook but still!! We had words on the way home

Just realised, both bikes I have dunlops. wtf? :eek2

Don't get me wrong, in the dry they are pretty sweet. I just like the almost instant grip you get from the PR2 and I am sure it's the same with the PR3

Putting PR3's on my bike has transformed it, I love them. I just hope I get a couple of years out of them. Tyre cost too much money. :eek2 PR3's and 2's arew the same compounds, the only difference is the Sipes http://vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php ... es#p247545
