'Motorbikes should be banned in Colchester High Street'

Post by Wicky »

In my local news rag:

http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/1028 ... h_Street_/
A TRANSPORT expert has warned allowing motorbikes to continue to use Colchester High Street when cars are banned will be a danger to pedestrians.

From March 17, all vehicles except buses, taxis, bikes and motorbikes will be barred from using High Street between 11am and 6pm.
Make it sound like Death Race 2000 were about about to be unleashed in my local High Street, with bikers awarded 20 bonus points per pedestrian...

Could be good to have a Storm pack ride through led by Marty in his taxi with scythes attached to each wheel :biggrin

Reading some of the comments left by the readers of this artical makes me want to hurl....
The artical does'nt go into enough detail as to what vehicles have been banned from the high street, Delivery vehicles (maybe or not)...buses, taxis, motorcycles and cyclists. why Taxis. don't they run people over too, Buses have also been known to hit pedestrians who happen to walk out in front of them. Maybe that is the answer. Ban the pedestrians.. Sorted.

It will be "all vehicles except buses, taxis, bikes and motorbikes will be barred from using High Street between 11am and 6pm." inc delivery vehicles.

Here in Colchester motorbikes can travel in bus lanes - I wish it was consistent throughout the country as I only have to go to Ipswich where it's not allowed, and risk receiving a penalty.

Pity motorbikes and the majority of brain dead idiots that ride them aren't banned altogether. Also make them wear high viz clothing so that when they undertake on dual carriageways, you can see them before they carry out these acts of total stupidity. However, I am sure that it will always be the car drivers fault when they get injured or killed as usual.
What a knob.

Another high street being closed to traffic then. I suppose the next thing the council will do is build a car park with expensive parking fee's and put more revenue camera's up

In London one has to be careful with the bus lanes as it's all a mish mash. Some you can ride in and other's you can't. You can guarantee the ones you can't ride in have cameras on for picking up some revenue and the road system is designed into fooling you into believing you can ride in them.

If somewhere is going to be made for pedestrian use only then it should be exactly that. No buses, cyclists, cars, delivery drivers, motorcyclists, trams, NOTHING. Or shall we just wrap all the pedestrians up in cotton wool instead. It's madness. I'm sure the council have ulterior motives here.

i would like to see mr calder's stats....
He said: “Department for Transport statistics indicate that for every mile travelled, a motorcycle is four times more likely than a car to be involved in pedestrian death or serious injury.

“Motorcycles therefore pose a disproportionate risk to pedestrians.”

what absolute piffle. :Ball Kick:
they must be classing motorcyclists as pedestrians..... you're telling me that bikes, which make up only 6% of the traffic on the road, kill or injure 4x as many pedestrians? rubbish.
in probably over a million miles on 2 wheels i have only ever hit one pedestrian, and thats cos the stupid cow walked in front of me - with no injury.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Don't understand the whole threat to pedestrians thing either... If a pedestrian steps onto the road without looking (but that'd NEVER happen right?!) a bike stands a greater chance of avoiding it cause we can swerve and we aren't as wide. It's also less force acting upon them if we hit them so they'd be less hurt surely? It would still bloody hurt, but screw it they can learn the hard way for walking out without looking

Yeah, he drives a Merc driver what do you expect, makes me laugh because I was moaning about this a little while ago, where drivers wont move out the outside lane to let you through instead try to get you to undertake.
