Lack of earth ?

Post by malone »

Hi everyone,

I've taken my storm apart this winter and given it an overhaul. The rear frame has among other things been sandblasted and powder coated.
When mounting the rear frame I have removed some of the powder coating where it connects to the main frame. Yesterday I had it running.....it started without problems an then it sounded a bit irregular. I took it for a spin and the first few minutes it had no power, a bit of misfires and some black smoke, and the smell of unburnt fuel. After a while it was back to normal....but still not to my satisfaction.

My question is: does the rear ignition coil need earthing to deliver the correct impuls to the spark plug and do I have to remove some of the paint where it bolts to the rear frame ? Or does the bike just need a good long warm run (it has not run at all from october to marts)

Before I took it apart it ran just right :D

Thanks

The Green wire on the Low tension circuit from the coil will run to earth. If you have some misfires or the bike sounds like it runs on one cylinder then you may want to check that the HT lead is connected properly. I don't know if you have had it removed but It's easy to push them on and think it's securely attached when in fact they need quite a push to get them right on and seated correctly. You could always verify that the coil is functioning by checking the the plug is sparking.

How long has the fuel been sitting in the tank, is it old fuel that has been sitting in the tank over Winter. Have you removed the tank at all. If so you may have not connected the vacuum back in the right place which would cause these symptoms. I would suggest giving the bike a good run to burn off any old stale fuel and get some fluid flowing through the carbs from where it has been sitting around and see if the problem persists after re-filling the tank.
