strange sound
how do, can anybody share some light on a strange happening.
every now and then when the bikes warm there seems to be what can only be described as a low "dunk" sound that seems to come from somewhere below me bits "no smart comments!"
is it me just being paranoid or stupid more to the point, could summut just be expanding with the heat?
any light shed on this would be gratefully recieved, cheers.

4 cyl = 2ltr , 2 cyl = 1ltr it's all relative.

Eddie,
are you talking about a noise that seems to come from the carbs at low speeds or on tickover?? if so don't worry it's normal.
Other than that I have'nt got a clue

hello again peeps, the noise is bizarr it just sort of happens, no power loss but i have noticed that it happens when im at a stand still or just stopped(dont know if id hear it on the move).
its not a rattle so maybe its something just expanding with heat, thanx for rattlin the old grey cells.

Ed, I think I have similar..
Standing still at lights, the occasional clout, thunk, donk. from the back pot.
Worried me at first as it sounded pretty mechanical. A quick blimp of the throttle though and everything seemed fine.
It's done it about 6 times now. Nothing has fallen off and the bike still goes like a monster.. so I figured it was a "feature"
Weird beasts, these big twins.
Trebs.

Normal!!?? For you maybe you backfiring bog houndEdd, it's normal. It's actually a backfire in the carbs

ha ha ha...
Sounds like you need to balance that hog of yours. Mine used to backfire through the carbs occassionally when I got her. I jetted her a few months later, drilled the slides (front one was a bit tight too so I filed down the edges a smidge), set up the fuelling, and balanced the carbs.... has never happened since.
I'd probably start with a balance - if that doesn't solve it maybe set up the mixture - if she's running too rich (as most Storms do) you can get petrol, erm, not condensing, but kind of collecting and running down (since the fuel:air ratio is too high) the intake walls and occassionally going KABOOM thus giving you a carb backfire.
Oh, and RQ, pencil me in for Saturday night - I'll be leaving around noon.

Out of my way or I'll eat the lot of ye!!

weird thunk
Interesting thread.
Looked into this myself a while ago.
It always felt like the clutch catching briefly to me.
Happened on warm up. I had to watch out for that first turn out of the drive in the morning cos she occasionally stalled mid turn (when i first got the bike and was getting used to her) which lead to rather undignified attempts to stop her falling on her ear. V uncool.
It makes sense to hear that its a back fire in the carb though, cos it seems to have lessened since i had a service.
Fitted leo vinci pipes which are fantastic but do get the occasional back fire first thing in the morning (guess that means she's running a bit rich).
I was told its a v twin thing. Ive either got used to it and keep the revs a bit higher till warm or its gone away since i got the carbs balanced cos I dont notice it anymore.
