debaffle

Going to get creative with the drill tomorrow and debaffle my standard cans

Is there anything I need other than a drill, file and some grips?

Any tips? I know their is no performance gain to be had but will fuel economy etc change?

Also noticed some people only do the drilling part of the mod, why is this?

A free flowing (de-baffled) exhaust will make it run a tad leaner. You should get away with the carbs, depending on how they are set up and what filter you are running. Some people just drill the holes (partial bafflectomy) as they want less noise and it looks more standard. Other will just go the whole hog (full bafflectomy) and rip the lot out. Add a hammer to you list of tools there. You will have to use a bit of brute force.

That's one thing I was thinking, because ill buy new cans in the next couple of months anyway, however I will be keeping the bike for some time so not sure it matters.

do the debaffled tend to look a bit butchered?

Sounds obvious but best done with pipes off the bike.

Drill the holes, cut /drill to join up the holes.

The baffle part will now wobble about, but you have to break the weld at the other end. tw@ it with a hammer, pushing back into the pipe, now get some mole grips on it & pull it back out & repeat until you get to the point where you can put the hammer down & pull & push it with the grips alone. Keep going until the weld snaps.

Clean up the open end, you can do it with a file but a grind stone on a drill or even better a dremel * will be much easier.

Refit to bike, you may need new clamps & gaskets so get these before you take them off !

Refit & enjoy.

I started by drilling a few holes. Then made them bigger. Then added more holes and eventually though f00k it, and whipped out the insides.

I left mine on the bike and had no issues.

Basically the pipe in the middle is welded lower down the chamber and you need to free it up. I used an aluminium pipe wedged down the pipe and wiggled/twisted it for ages. Then as it started to free up, twated it with a hammer.

The tougher the welds, the harder it is to get out I guess.

I didn't fully de-baffle the cans on my storm, I just drilled 4 10mm holes at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions. I got a deeper sound with out it beeing too loud, a good compromise I thought.

I've just done a similar thing on the SV which gives a similar result; "which is nice"

Yeah I know that curiosity would get the better of me too mate thats why I'm gonna go the whole hog

I'm going out on the bike tomorrow so will do it after that trip, don't want to have a rattley exhaust if I can't get the whole thing out easily lol

they sound so much better being debaffled, doubt they'd be any mot issues with them either. i'd consider using debaffled originals in the future...

What fuel economy ?

If your that worried about fuel ride it slower.

No I didn't notice any difference & it do sound nice.
