Cheapest option
Replace the fork oil for something a bit thicker - £5

Next
Replace Fork springs - £70

Once those are done
Fit a rear shock spacer - Free

Hope this helps

TBH the only ones I've got first hand experience of are Ohlins and they are good (and I think Roger from Revolution fits 'em)
Just make sure you get linear ones coz the progressive ones seem like a good idea but don't work that way in practice

Ben

PS If you need any advice on this sort of stuff Roger is a VERY personable chap who is quite happy to talk (often at length  ) on any aspect of setup etc

its all subjective

Post by stu9000 »

Its all subjective.
My previous bike to the VTR was an old kwak zzr600.
Needless to say the VTR felt A LOT lighter and flickable.
Its a different generation of bike.

Its like the bike magazines write, comparing the latest fireblade with the new zx10, but at the end of the day, unless youve been to a few track days and riding for a few years im not sure how much more you'd get out of the experience (except perhaps the pose factor).

I have yet to do a track day and I feel im still growing into my VTR.
Most articles write about how the forks let the bike down a bit.
In hard cornering on poorish road surface it does not always feel as sure footed as it could.

I probably will put heavier fork oil in or something similar but at the mo' its not my top priority.

I did change the exhausts to a pair of 2nd had Leo Vinci's. These sound the dogs bollox and make other drivers much more aware. Didnt notice too much extra power putting them on but certainly did notice a loss of power when I put the standard cans back on for the MOT. Swopped em back quick smart. Standard cans just strangle the bike and make it sound rubbish. Criminal on a v twin.

Brakes seem to be getting spongy, even after changed the oil. So sorting out braided hoses now. If you do the same make sure they give you VTR firestorm and not SP1 hoses which will not fit, as I found out after Id taken the fairing off. V annoying.

My rear shock seems fine. Someone else might be able to comment better on how to check it.

Suspension when I got the bike had been severly messed about with. The front had been compressed to the max which felt all wrong to me so I put it back to standard as quoted in Haynes and Ive been v happy with it.

Ive read a lot about suspension and although im no expert Its a common misconception that harder is better. Ive been told that often its better to have a softish front to absorb bumps and dive.

That said, if, as I push the bike harder over time, and if I find the suspension cant cope Ill be contacting a specialist to set it up (been told it doesnt have to cost much and could make all the difference).

Tyres make a big difference to handling. I spent the winter on old flattened off tyres and was getting really depressed about the handling. Obvious really but new Bridgestone touring tyres made the bike feel completely different.

All things considered the VTR is a great bike for a medium experienced rider who wants to tour and scratch in reasonable comfort. I cant see myself changing for a few years yet.

goodridge hoses

Post by stu9000 »

Got the hoses on this weekend.
Rang up Hein Garricke who were v helpful.
I was a bit confused because the instructions said SP1.

In the end I got them on without having to remove anything apart from the faring.

Those little black plastic bolts at the lower front of the faring are a bit crap and wont last many more removals. Anyone know a good fix?

Once I got the new hoses on at the handlebars it was easy.
didnt seem to make a whole lot of difference at first but much better after a night with the brake lever lashed to get rid of any air.

And I just feel cooler too.

cheers,

about a week after fitting them a white van pulled out on me.
I hit it, but at pretty low speed.

Would have been a LOT nastier if I still had the old spongy brakes on.
