Bike Cams

Post by Miztaziggy »

Been looking at a few options, mainly the Sony AS15
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/cam-action-cam/hdr-as15

Or the GoPro Hero 3
http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero3-silver-edition

Both sound pretty good, the Sony sounds as though it is more difficult to mount, but it is cheaper and it has SteadyShot which really looks like it makes a massive difference.

The Sony looks better picture quality too, but the GoPro has many more extras, addons and mounting kits available. Both have WiFi so that I can use the phone as a view finder.

I really can't decide, and especially now I have seen some cheaper options from China
http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wholes ... ssory_Kit/

I found a UK site reviewing some cameras from Chinavasion, and generally they are good, although this particular one isnt reviewed.

So, what do any of you guys use?

How do you mount it? And where do you mount it?

What is the quality like and does it suffer any vibration?

Does anyone have any specific recommendations?

drift hd all the way mate - i sold my gopro within weeks of getting mine - infinitely superior.

or for a cheaper option get the eagle eye drift copy off ebay - theyre ony about 65 quid atm and work very well.

an interesting feature of the drift is the loop option.... great for if you commute, just in case you get shunted off... it will record a 15/30/45/60 minute loop then overwrite.

hd files use a lot of card though so i just use mine either on 720 or 640x480 and the quality is just as good when you upload it to youtube or vimeo but takes a lot less space on your hd card.

for hd you will need at least a 16gb card, pref 32

The Sony looks to me like it's more of a small hand held handycam type camera rather than a true sports cam. The sort of thing someone would use on a day out at Disney or something. It's got the CMOS Exmor sensor which is OK for picture quality, but be aware with CMOS you will get some blurring when panning too fast. The older 3 CCD cameras are better for motion. Steadcam works well for handheld stuff when not using a tripod at the sacrifice of losing a bit of picture quality but it's not going to keep a picture very steady on a bike over bumpy roads and things.

Personally for a consumer based camera I would go with the GoPro as they are tried and tested as a tough true action cam whether motorcycling, skydiving, rock climbing, Canoeing, Mountain biking etc. They also come with many accessories and mounts.

The drift does look good mate, but it's really expensive. It's in gopro 3 black territory....

Benny had the Standard Definition go pro like me and went for the Drift as did I and they are leagues apart (Drift is superior). However the new GoPro Black is the dogs baldrocks as far as quality goes. You cannot really see the difference in quality on youtube. You have to see it raw. Just look at the spec 720p & 960p @100fps 1080p @60fps and 2.7K@30fps. That's in the black edition though so more money.

The white edition go pro is similar to the new drift ghost

imo
For mounting, Gopro FTW
For the remote and onboard screen as standard Drift Ghost FTW

If I had the cash though, GoPro Black edition all day long followed by the Drift Ghost.

what geo said.

and ghost... onboard screen is a massive bonus.
as is ffwd / rewind feature
and ext mic = the perfect cam for vlogging.
they are 1/2 the size of the old drift btw, very small and neat - i was impressed.
plus the wifi / bluetooth feature means you can upload on the fly and dump the vid direct to youtube at a maccies!
the new drift btw will attach to any gopro mount, as well as any std camera mount or drift mount

The WiFi on the Gopro and Sony acts like a screen I thought, personally I had imagined it would be better as the cam may be fixed to a helmet or lower fairing.

As for attaching the drift to the Gopro mounts, that's interesting. How does that work? The Drift looks like it's on a screw tripod mount and the attachments go onto that screw. Can you get a converter to Gopro style?

Geo, I didnt realise the Black could do more than 1080 to be honest, just re-read the specs and im impressed, it can even do 4k, albeit only 15fps.
I do like the look of the Drift HD, but the fact is that it's about £310 and a Gopro Black is only £290.

I just sold £300 worth of Bitcoins so im sorely tempted to spend that on one of those beauties.

But im still really tempted by a cheaper Chinese option, I could spend the extra on the mounts and extra stuff for it.....

One of my mates has a helmet camera that is really good, just like I thin 25mm tube about 3 inch long
Ill have to ask him what its called, I'm sure its a hawk something or something-hawk

I really like the go pros but can't justify the cost for filming the odd video here and there

If I wanted a lasting memory as a video id just get a chase off the old bill and watch the video on traffic cops haha

Yeah that's the only thing holding me back.

Ill only ever record the odd ride out, at most 5 or 6 times a year, then it will sit there gathering dust.

When it comes to stuff like this though, I get an idea in my head, and the money just burns a hole in my pocket till I have to get it.
