Moped worries....

Post by callam_nffc »

At the bike show last year my mrs had a go on the "get on" section, using a 50cc moped of some sort.

It was possibly one of the scariest things i could imagine watching lol, not that she did anything wrong, just my imagination was depicting every wheelie/lowside/crash combo imaginable.

she doesnt drive at the moment and ever since the show shes wanted one, so what do i do?

Encourage her to have one? as lets face it, i quite possibly wouldnt have had bikes if people had put me off so early on and im sure they were equally as worried

Or do i just put her off at all costs haha

Convince her mopeds are dangerous, tell her the safest way to go is to get a nice 500 or something

It will only end in tears.

Your piece and quiet will be gone for ever. Tell her biking is your thing and knitting is less hazardous.

do it mate, i would love to be able to share my passion with the person i most love, as it is she's not a fan of the bikes and less so of my ebay habits

I promised i wouldn't be spending on this and buying bits like the storm,

so far i've bought Carbon Fibre rear fender, a white rear fender, carbon fibre front fender, MRA double bubble screen, various Titanium bolts, paint protection kit, Renthal Race Grips, etc etc

I keep telling tanya she should get a little bike but she says she's happy with the car, i try explaining its not the same but shes not for it

i think if she tried it she would love it but then i the demons would set in and i would think could she read the road and developing hazards well enough would she be looking out for things happening unexpected sh1t with other road users, people pulling out of there and there and doors opening and all that

if she was to have an accident i would probably blame myself,

Take Mac For example he's a very experienced rider if it can catch him out it's all too easy for novice to have an accident

Few month ago i was lucky not to have smashed the storm into a car that pulled out, in a 20 zone i had seen her ages back i'm following my mate in his fiesta there is a good safe distance between us sunny day i'm on a bright orange bike with white helmet and my lights on going along a road, to my left there is a road that joins ours i see her stopped my mate passes her and then just as i'm passing she pull's out, i grabbed so much brake the rears in the air i was so lucky it was not a wet day like the previous otherwise i would have hit that car at 20mph which would have ruined the bike
she was very apologetic but i just couldn't believe how the wombles she had not seen me, that was the closest i had come to a collision crash in my life
the adrenalin was pumping by now so all that came out of my mouth was obscene words they probably didn't make sense
i got to my mates house about 5 mins down the road and was shaking and felt sick it was not nice thinking what very nearly happened and was out of my hands

if that had been tanya i know she would not have had the strength to get it stopped and would have been at best some very broken bones

I'd love to be able to chat bikes with her but can't hence my unhealthy obsession with this place

Some people just enjoy riding them like my dad but i enjoy the inner workings and what makes things tick as well as the riding and the forum quenches my thirst

this has gone well off topic but balls to it lol

I completely understand mate

one half thinks its just hypocritical if I try and stop her, so I should encourage her to do it, and also help her learn to spot hazards earlier etc

the otherhalf, like yourself, realizes how many idiots are on the road and that worries me
id probably insist she wore a high-viz jacket everywhere haha

But high-vis doesn't make the difference people expect it too. If they aren't looking or paying attention, they won't see you. Doesn't matter if you're in high-vis, neon pink textiles or a 16 foot high godzilla cosplay-er

yeah I know mate, but anything you can do to minimize risk is a bonus :)

to be honest though if you were one of these folk into dressing like anime characters, it would make me more inclined to run you over haha

get her riding trials to develop bike skills off road then she will understyand grip, balance, throttle and brakes..........then you will know she has got control of the bike and is in a good starting point to survive in the traffic

Did I mention that i have a brand new, less than 2 miles (wheeled in and out of garage to be cleaned) ped for sale for £300?
Black, crying out for stickers, even has a top box and screen if you want.....
Would need a number plate, never registered, but I can't be bothered insuring it just to get the plate (you need to show this in order to get a plate issued) 50cc four stroke.
Gazillion miles to the gallon, slow, but hey, it's a ped.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
