Maybe no VTR then..

Post by Virt »

Starting to look like I can't ride the vtr for a long while yet. Insurance has gone from £800 to £4000...

Got it back down to £450 tpft before realising I'd put the wrong date of birth! :( Now they're asking 1.5k tp...

Guess I'm gonna be on the hornet for a while longer. Takes the actual piss. I really want to know their reasoning behind increasing the premium fivefold

Have you asked them why? They do make it up as they go along!

Maybe they realised "hey wait a minute, that's a sporty bike".. To be honest, I don't see why it matters so much? I mean, I'm 18. Yeah if it did have that power I'd be more likely to crash it, but isn't it umm.. what's the word.. Restricted? Should be able to say that I'm cutting the power down on it so that the insurance reflects this. Then all that matters is bike's value, security, area etc. I don't understand why we can't declare the restriction as a modification on insurance because it is a performance modification, in every sense of the phrase. Just a slightly negative one...

And if the restrictor falls out then oh dear, I'd be essentially riding without insurance and if I crashed then they'd have no reason to cover my back. So I seriously don't understand. This makes sense to me, but I can't be the only one?

Shop around some more, try ebike, carol nash, Peter James (good for older stuff) MCE, to name a few. Firestorm is a low insurance group and not classed as high as a modern 600, think it's group11. tell them your best quote so far is £800 and see what they can do. It's a pia but worth it if it saves you money.

I've used all the comparison sites I can. MCE were the quoted £800 fc before but now they won't touch me, which confuses me. Especially with their "any bike any age" thing, and that was £800 with the ohlins declared too... eBike are asking for 3k tpft.. carol nash won't touch, and peter james.. I haven't heard of, I'll try but I'm not confident. They've all banded together on a hate wagon against me

Get on the phone, it takes ages but you'll often get a better deal than comparison sites by going direct.

Yeah they have been reading up on here & joined in with the rest of us...

You need to do a lot of phone bashing Virt, not all insurance co's are on comparison sites. Then not all the ones on the sites are actual insurance co's anyway. MCE are just a brokers they do not insure your bike, you pay them to look for someone who will & they add their bit to the cost.

The whole business is a mine field & a rip off as has been discussed else where.

After recent event I wouldn't touch MCE with someone else's shitty covered long stick...Well maybe to beat them over the head with it...

Try a bookmakers, (same kind of business as Insurance co. just a different way of looking at the same problem) and see what odds they quote on you not being involved in an accident at 18 on a 1000cc bike. Get a bank loan to pay-up-front to insurance for the necessary certificate - collect winnings from bookmakers to at end of year to pay off bank loan.

Sorted!

Go do Bike Safe and then the IAM Advanced test. That'll bring it down a bit,

Gonna book a bike safe in the next few months, that was always planned for my first year of riding at some point. And my dad wants me to do an IAMs course at some point before I come off the restrictor, but I don't think I'll be able to do it soon. Confidence is still suffering and I'm picking up bad habits from commuting to work and riding alone most of the time

Loving that idea Wicky, very good

I'll phone them up closer to the time I think, no need as I don't need insurance for 4 months yet. And I'll keep that in mind Mac
Except the comment about hating me, I'll ignore that one completely

Wicky that is brilliant.

Yeh Virt anther vote from me regarding phoning them direct for quotes. Comparison sites are not designed for you as you not the average rider. At leas if you speak to them you can mention the restrictors and have that taken into consideration. On the price comparison they are quoting you for 1000 cc bike at 18 years old, off course that is going to be Sky high. I would not start telling them about mods/upgrades either, like the shock. Keep :shh: It will only give them an excuse to charge you more. The only thing I would mention is the non performance based aftermarket cans added just for the noise for safety reasons. Apart from that the bike is all standard except for the restrictors.
