Fuel tank capacity

Ok so I've got a 1998 storm and believe it has a 16l tank.

I've read that from the fuel light coming on I should have approx 2.5l left in the tank.

Took the bike to work last night and there was less fuel in the tank than I thought so the light came on a couple miles from home but I was already running late so plodded on thinking I would stop for fuel on the way home.

Good plan but at work I realised I didn't have my wallet so no fuel on the way home.

Now it's its 9 miles to work which I worked out at being 16 miles on the red light to get home a bit close to call for me but it made it home no dramas.

Just been to fill it up and only took 11l to fill it which makes me think there was still 5 litres in the tank so why would the fuel light come on so early. It must be coming on with 7 ish litres still in the tank.

Someone has bent the sender up to have a safer margin when out and about .
Fill a gallon can up and strap it on the back .
Fill the tank and run it to the light -take note how many miles YOU got till the light - then ride it till it runs out then you will know how many miles YOU can get on YOUR storm from full till you have to push it :-)

I ran my bike dry last week, when I limped it to a petrol station and filled up I put in 15.5ltrs, which I've heard is about right, because you can't get to the last half a litre. to get 16ltrs into the tank you have to fill the tank completely, above the metal bar whilst sitting on the bike. otherwise like carl, when he fills up his bike on the sidestand and below the metal bar, you'll only be getting 14 or so litres in the tank and your fuel light will be lighting up at 70 to 80 miles....

take note how many miles YOU got till the light - then ride it till it runs out then you will know how many miles YOU can get on YOUR storm from full till you have to push it

But bare in mind that you get less MPG in heavy town traffic, also on a slight side note I noticed today that my bike is running a fair bit richer in this hot humid weather that has less air particles within it.

MPG.. I made really good mpg coming back from the West Country recently.. albeit
I had a westerly wind on my tail end and and took it a tad easy but I had a really
comfortable ride and didnt flog it .. must have done up to 50 mpg by working things out
chuffed rather as they have said best just check with a seperate gallon etc
but considering all in all you'll be ok.

Must admit. I always fill up sat on the bike with it as upright as possible and fill it to the brim if I'm going on a run. It might only give you an extra 10-20 miles but we are pretty lucky in this country and there are normally quite a few petrol stations within a 10 mile radius of you and I like riding not not pushing. Of course there is always the motorway scenario. How many folk pass a services and then look at the fuel gauge/trip mileage

I fill to the brim on the sidestand. My reason for doing this is because I want to leave a small gap at the top so I don't get a vacuum airlock in the tank. It feels strange sitting on the bike because there's the thing about sitting on the bike with your lid on and filling up and the petrol stn thinking your going to do a runner. I have a little routine. Stop, switch bike off, get off bike, take helmet and gloves off and sit them on the pump, fill up, grab helmet and go in and pay, come back out, reset trip meter, start bike, helmet and gloves back on and off I go. I always remove my helmet when going into petrols stns or shops.

I always pay at the pump purely to remove this idea, have to stick my card in first so there's no way to get away without paying. That said, some cheeky, spotty 17 year old normally comes out and says I need to remove my helmet... Yeah, no. Then I have to remove my gloves to undo/do up the buckle thing. I'd rather just pay, fill up, leave and save myself an extra minute or 2 that can be used to get out of godawful rugby and reach 60mph roads

if its the start of a ride i'm lazy and if i can stay on the bike with all my kit on, brim the tank and then go and pay, still with all my gear on, 9/10 times they're ok about the crash helmet staying on, its different if its whist on a long days ride because you want a break and to stretch your legs.

I HATE all those kind of systems and would only use one in emergency's like French pumps in the middle of the night or something. 1st I would rather not use plastic and 2nd I don't like the way they make people unemployed. Look at how many cashiers you have down the local supermarket these days because of automatic swipe style machines, fooking robots and it looks like your becoming one. You will be assimilated. Cash is best and it don't leave a trace.

Well I am a Software Engineer/Consultant by trade... It is to be expected of me
the local supermarket to us still has about 15 cashiers... it just has the same amount of automatic ones too, but the difference is they suck. They constantly beep at you for no reason and require you to get someone to come and swipe it away. Paying at the pump actually works, is the difference And I don't have any requirement to not leave a trace. If I do anything, oopsy I have a sufficient knowledge to cover my tracks on le interwebs unless they search into it. In which case, wombles, I stand no chance. I prefer cards for the convenience..

Also, don't disrespect robots. I wanna make one and program it somewhen

I had a blond moment last year with the pay at the pump system at my local tescos.

was on one of my early morning, petrol wasting, out to Crossgates for a bacon butty and back home by 1pm, type rides...... so brimmed the tank [helmet on, as like Virt & Marty I cant be arsed taking it off when I have only just put in on] at the pay at pump and shot off to wales. once there the fuel light was on so after my bacon butty I filled the bike up and went in to pay and found my bank card was missing!!!!!!! sh1t I must have dropped it at my local Tescos .........fortunatly I had my work credit card as well so I used that to pay and headed off home, stopping at Tescos to see if they had found my bank card. Yup, someone had handed it in and after showing my ID they gave it back to me

but can you imagine if I didnt have any cash or a back up credit card, I would now be stranded in mid Wales with only sheep for company.
