Gripping stuff...

Post by Girlie_Biker »

Anyone swapped their grips?

If so why, and what did you go for?

I'm thinking of looking for different grips and the standard ones feel so small.

depends what youre used to gripping, most Hondas are smallish grips, not sure aftermarket ones or much bigger.. why not experiment with some foam rubber aroung the grip to see if it helps ?
it may be clever, but its not big.

You can buy cheap and effective heated grips - those always bigger.
Harris Prformance (Ariete) - those gel-see-through about same size with standards...
To be honest - I never saw OEM grips much bigger than standards...
Except chromed ones :) for "custom-like" bikes

I just put on some renthal (medium) ones, they are quite tight (maybe even smaller than the OEM. But I like them.

I've got some cheap heated grips on mine - they are thicker and also nice on cold days!

I'm considering some heated grips for the winter. What's the power drainage like? and is it a straight forward fit onto the bars, and where do you lay the cable to the battery?

Hi Girlie Biker,
When I first read your post I thought you were talking about hairgrips!!!
You know, the kind of thing girlies talk about.
Made me laugh when I realised you meant the other type of grip!! :)

I have a pair of "Daytona" heated grips on my CBR - I don't use the Firestorm in the winter ;) They have 2 power settings, high and low.

Power drain: they will drain the battery in a short time if left on, particularly if you use the high power position. However, there is sufficient extra capacity in the charging system to power the grips with no problems.

Ease of fitting: remove old grips, push new grips on ends of handlebars. Route wiring alongside existing handlebar switches, using zip ties to keep everything tidy.

Connecting to battery: this is a bad idea. Connect the grips to an ignition switched power supply, so they are turned off when you turn the ignition off. I tapped into the fusebox on the CBR, under the rhs of the fairing. The VTR fusebox is under the seat so you might have to extend the wire a bit.

The only other thing you need to do is mount the switch somewhere accessible, using the sticky pad supplied, mine is on the instrument panel.

I went for Harris grips because standard ones didn't feel right. The ones I got match my carbon fibre levers and bar ends so it's even better. 8) About the same size though.

Curly

 Well with a name like that, I bet you know all about those types of grips!

Rainmaker

Good thinking, now I just need to find some spare foam rubber lying around.... actually I might have some from some cheap armour I took out an old jacket  cheers!

Thanks chaps, yes I think cause I'm used to my kwak grips and also my heated grips on the ZZR it just feels odd.

I've got the Motrax grips on my ZZR - which go straight to the battery - fantastic things - just remember to turn the buggers off  can be a trifle embarassing when/if you forget!

I'm gonna have a look at aftermarket grips I think some of it might be that the standard grips just feel really thin. For want of a better phrase I want to feel like I've got a hold of something substantial.

I'm glad you refrained yourself there, especially after all the good work you put in on women being equal and all that, it would have been a crying shame to let yourself down, well done :!:
