Michelin Pilot Power 3

On my way back from B&Q today I called in at the local bike tyre place to get some oil. Asked for a price on a new Dunlop Sportmax Sportsmart tyre to replace my rear. Thought that I would be best since it matches the front and what I have on now, and I know I like them.

They guy said £147 fitted, which isn't bad really.

He said that he thought Dunlops were really expensive and not very good. He said Michelin were much cheaper and he thought a better tyre. He thought that it would suit the track better than a Dunlop too.

He priced a Michelin Pilot Power 3 fitted at £87, front at £75. That's a pair for only £15 more than a single rear.

Why so cheap?

Are those tyres sh1t or something?

Are mismatched tyres really all that bad (eg Dunlop Sportmax on front and Michelin on rear)?

i know the place in farnworth has some deal with michelin they get them cheaper than they get other brands tires so push them and offer incentives with them, speaking of which i have a bloody fuel voucher somewhere

Maybe so, but it really is a massive difference in price.

Unless there is something wrong with them, or having mismatched tyres, ill probably get that since it's so much cheaper.

If they REALLY ARE power 3's then go get them fitted asap, he's made a massive mistake with the price !
I get one of the best deals on tyres available (trade) and they would cost me a lot more than he's quoted you. the tyre manufactures don't tend to sell direct and if they do the tyres are usually more costly, best to go through a wholesaler.

The best prices always tend to be on ebay, don't be fooled.

+1 on that. Ask him what he'll do Pilot Road 3's for ?? They come up as roughly the same price as the Power 3's in the trade, and at that money I'd buy some even though I dont need them yet !!

From what I have read, it's more of a budget sports tyre. But to be honest, £87 is still very cheap for that.

The price for a Pilot Power 2CT which has better grip is £119 and comes with a £10 fuel voucher.

A Pilot Power 3, which is their new flag ship sports tyre is £137 and again comes with a £10 fuel voucher.

I think ill go for the Power 3 and pay that little bit more, although I am tempted, I would be gutted if I went for the £87 tyre to save £50 and dropped the bike at Cadwell and did £2000 worth of damage.

I don't know how you ride mate, but unless you're a track god, I'd get the Pilot Road 2 or 3. They'll give you more grip than you'll ever need on the road, last forever, and you'll be clad of them if you get caught out in the rain. Best tyres I've ever used.

I dont ride crazy on the road but these are for the track. 2 days booked for August at Cadwell and Donnington.

Well I got a Pilot power 3 fitted this lunch time, and left it in the back of the car at the office all afternoon.

When I got home and took it out, I noticed the edges were blue...it's very odd, you can see the line where the hard compound finishes and the soft begins very easily. It looks like MASSIVE chicken strips.

All I can think is that it must have been quite warm in the car, maybe 30-40 degrees. I have read before that a blue tyre means it's past its best, but, I have also read that it's just oils that come out of the rubber when it warms up, and it scrubs off in use.

I guess the fact that this has started to go blue on a brand new tyre sort of gives a bit of weight to the latter theory....

Little Bro has just put a set on his Gixxer750 and he's loving them
He had some cheep rubbish on the bike when he bought it and coudln't wait to get rid of them. It's amazing how some good rubber can transform a bike and give you back your confidence/enjoyment.
I had the 2CTs on the SP and got some pretty good mileage out of them. Found them a bit slow to warm up but after that they were okay. Didn't like the winter on them though, mind you, I'm not that keen on winter riding these days
