Only just saw this
Don't slaken of the cct retraction screw with the engine Running!
Jesus Yella when you hear it rattle the next time take it to your man and get him to have another listen. Better yet find another man and have him listen, better still just change the buggers and have done with it.
For the sake of a few quid it will tell you if thats what it is or not. The alternative could be a seized engine whilst riding(missis might kill you if you hurt yourself  ) or just a knackered engine

Dont worry Pete, i'm not (totally) stupid ! :?
Had a look this morning, ran her up for half an hour . . . . no noise ! Bugger !
farted about for ages and finally had a peek at the pesky little sods. Kept the gaskets intact too ! :D
Springs working fine, no pickup on the shaft, etc. Oiled them up and refitted, ok. :D
Ran her up again, no noise ! All of a sudden i could hear it again, this time i figured it out straight away ! Front downpipe gasket !
Just enough to make that bloody noise ! and almost as soon as i realised where it was coming from it stopped again !
Gaskets Monday ! Thats one thing off my mind ! :D

Cool Yella :D
Glad you finally got to the bottom of it.
Go steady with the rear link pipe gasket when you take the front header pipe off. Thats a favorite for going too, much easier to diagnose though because all it does is let the pipe suck air and make louvley popping sounds on the over run
