Best standard gearing chain & sprocket kits?

Post by Jamoi »

Hi chaps, sorry if there's a thread on this already, I couldn't find one.

I'm in need of a new chain and sprockets kit, as my rear is hooked and suspect the whole set-up is still the originals from the factory.

I've found some rental kits, they seem to be the most expensive and I've also found some £80 kits (x-ring I think), if you know what you are running can you tell me? Or if you've had experience with rental kits vs other brands I'd love to know the difference in longevity.

I had a renthal kit on my MX bike and seemed to stay new forever!

Regards

I recommend VTR1000F 97-05 D.I.D Xtreme Performance Chain and Sprocket Kit, along with a scottoiler...

& some recent chain & sprocket threads...

Thanks Wicky you're a VTR-Star! Now I've got my bike set up, I'd be keen to go for a ride some time, maybe get some breakfast in Burnham one weekend?

It's nice to see a bit of humour when thumbing tediously through products like sprockets

Looks like I've got some waiting to do before I can order the kit  it's been a very expensive month! 8O

Thank you both for your help

I run one as well, very good a little messy perhaps but chain and sprockets seem to last forever

I wonder how much of that is down to the kit and how much is the Scottoiler looking after the kit.

I think the Scottoiler is the key here as it doubles the life of any chain, especially with these bikes as it not so simple to oil the chain on your own while out and about. The reason I say this is because there is no main stand. I find myself not oiling the chain as much as I should/would normally. If I had a main-stand I would oil it a lot more regularly. Yes I could get someone to tip the bike over on the side-stand, but when out and about that is not always possible.

Well I've done 6000 miles on the hornet and the chain hasn't been adjusted once as it still isn't necessary. Will probably need to be adjusted soon, but either way. Isn't bad going, I thinks

Yours need a bloody good clean .

Paddock stands are very handy when oiling the chain :-) I do mine weekly or more if needed

I don't even do that. Last time I got you to tip it over on the sidestand. :biggrin Actually tell a lie... I did put it on the Abba stand last time after you went away. I done it the same time I washed and waxed the bike.

Scottoiler's to me, are a bit like Carol Vorderman... I'm not sure if would or wouldn't.

I get a strange pleasure from cleaning & lubing the chain myself, I guess it's time spent doing something productive to the bike which costs nothing really.

I had a scottoiler on my ZX9R and never bothered to clean the rear end as it only lasted a day or too, that was with the damn thing set really low too. :-(

thats a good thing with the loobman, you decide how much to put on the chain and how often.

it is also a bad thing as you may also forget to put any oild on the chain :(

You can get different oil for the scottoiler thick for warm weather and thin for cold weather, like the pillock I am I bought the wrong one, that's probably why it's a bit messy
