My 1500 mi weekend.....

Post by 8541Hawk »

As some of you know I took a quick run up to the SF Bay Area this weekend.

Fri started well with the supertanker loaded up and ready to go.....
Image

I did have a bit of trepidation as I have had a bit of a run of bad luck with the bike lately.
I figured between the shock and the wheel bearing I was at 2 and even though I don't consider myself superstitious thess things do tend to run in 3's so I had to wonder if something was coming.

I really didn't have too long to wait..... I was going up the coast or Hwy 1 and in sections it is one way traffic, so the have stop lights set up.
I roll up to one of these and staying over by the shoulder, to keep from getting ass packed by a car, come to a stop.....and didn't see the big assed hole right where I tried to put my foot..... :redface
So I ended up dropping the bike..... All in all it could have been much worse but after a few choice words, had a nice lad help me pick her back up (though he did manage to break my taillight) and found the damage was the right mirror, the brake lever, cracked the fairing and the one that really pissed me off.... dented the link pipe. Then later I realized that while picking the bike up I burned a hole in my new textile pants...... damn

No pics then but here is one from the next day:

After getting rolling again, made it the rest of the way with no issues.

Sat morning got together with some of my old riding group ( I lived in the Bay Area for 18yrs up until about a year and a half ago) to run my all time favorite loop, Mt Hamilton - San Antonio Valley - Del Puerto Cyn then luch in Patterson. Back up Del Puerto - Mines

It's one of those bumpy, twisty , dirty fun roads that is just perfect for a twin......

Sun morning was a run up to Alice's in the Santa Cruz Mts, It is a big meet up spot. The main parking lot pics didn't come out but it spilles out to the other side of the road also:

After turning down an invite to ride with the fast group....... last thing I need to to worry about throwing the bike down and not being able to get home.... I did a solo ride through the Redwood forests..... It is so nice out there. I did get one pic.... if any of you played Road Rash you might remember this place:

Then all too soon it was time to make the run home....... Took the "quick way" home, so nothing but a 6 hr drone on the Motorway to report there.

So all in all a good weekend and I can only hope I don't have anymore bike issues for a while.

That's pretty damned unlucky sticking your foot in that big hole....

In this country you might be able to sue the local council for that.

I would love to ride across parts of America. Those pictures look really good, and that road looks insane :)

One of these days, ill go to America and rent a bike and go travelling for a little while. Your towns and cities are much more spread out than ours, so much more open road to enjoy. Awesome.

Sounds like you had a great time Hawk, apart from the slip over. If that was no 3 then not to bad really no major damage done.

If you need a rear light I have one spare that I can bung in the post for you.

Argh man...talk about a run of bad luck. :( can you sue anyone for the hole in the road. Well at least you got some miles under you belt after getting the Ohlins back and had a break (no pun intended) from things. I have never heard of Road Rash but I look the look of Apple Jacks. Do they have any problems with root with that big tree right next to them.

Well if you ever make to CA just let me know..... I'm sure I can show you a couple of fun roads anywhere in the state

As for making a claim. I probably could but the damage is so minimal that it is not really worth it.
The fairing had been repaired once before...in fact it cracked on the same line.... but I can still repair it again.
The brake lever was a stock unit so now I have an excuse to buy some Chinese knock offs as they are cheaper than a stock RC lever.
I have an old mirror to pop on so in reality it's just my link pipe and it is small enough not to effect performance so I'll check with Leo to see what they go for now.

Then I don't know what is wrong with the tail light yet, it is just flopping around so I need to pull the tail section to see what is going on there.

For the road..... well there is a reason I traveled a bit over 400 miles to get to it......

I have heard horror stories about the Chinese brake levers. I saw one guy reviewing his on Youtube, before he used it, showed him fitting it and showed it snapping right off in his hand the first time he squeezed it :eek2 :eek2 :eek2 . Be careful and make sure you thoroughly check its strength before you ride.

Thank you sir, I have to pull it off first to see what is going on but right now I had to duct tape it in as it was flopping all over the place.....

That is how I justified it to myself.... in reality I should have hit the ground one of the two times before...so maybe the bike just needed to hit the ground to get it out of it's system......
All in all it was about as slight of damage as you can get by dropping her on her side with no sliders..... it happens :eh:

Yeah I did get a couple of really good rides in and also got to ride with some friends which I really don't get to do anymore as I have no riding group in my new area....well at least not yet........

Road Rash was a hoot...... typical early motorbike racing game but with a couple of twists......
The nitrous boost was fun but atypical....

What set it apart is you also had chains and clubs to beat the hell out of each other anytime you got close to someone....or if the rozzers where chasing you..... just take you night stick or big chain and have at it

Apple Jacks was one of the finish cut scenes....

As for roots, that building was originally the Back Smiths shop when the area was being logged in the 1800's so they have had issues and have redone the foundation a few times, that I know of.

It is located in La Honda:

https://maps.google.com/maps?client=fir ... =0CJUBELYD[/googlemap]

and if you look at the surrounding roads you can see why it is such a good riding area.
If you click on the satellite view you will see that this area is all coastal Redwood Forrest.

So if you don't feel like riding at an "aggressive" pace, you can just back it off and enjoy how nice it all looks

Well I have heard so very good reviews also, so thanks for the heads up and yes I will check them before running them.
With the machining background that I have I should be able to assess if that will hold up.

Dam I was born in the wrong country. :( :( I would love one of those houses off that road with a pool. Nicely shaded under the trees that road with little spots of sun shining through in patches. Beautiful.

Here you go, it could have been worse.
