What would you do

Post by AMCQ46 »

right folks, I have a dilema on the Akrapovic pipes i have just bought and wonder what you would do?

inspired by lloydie i decided i wanted to upgrade to a nice set of Akras and spotted an oval carbon, twin pipe set for a ZZR1400 in the Demon Tweeks clearance shop on e-bay. i phoned them up and asked them to measure the od of the link pipes and was told they were 52mm, which sounded good enough as i had quickly measured my viper link pipes at 50mm.

so they arrived yesterday and omg how light are they, the almost feel fragile they are so light!!!!

but!!!!!

1) they are 1.5" longer than the existing Vipers
2) my measurement of the link pipes wasnt correct, they are closer to 51mm, so this should be even better to fit to the Akras, so i try a test fit....and
3) the bloke who measured the Akras at 52mm was worse than me as the are close to 50mm and they wont fit on the links :(

so

do i keep modding the akras and the links to fit and risk it being a bodge job or do i sell them on e-bay and start again?

i am tending towards selling as having felt how light and potentially fragile the CF feels i can understand why the V2 pulses can kill them. also being that bit longer, i dont think they will look right?

the only plus side is i paid £350 for them brand new, and a 2nd had pair just sold on e-bay for 370, so I should be able to get my money back :D

Yes mate I would definitely sell.

First pipes that are too long look sh1t. On any bike.

Second, if you try to bodge it and it doesn't work out properly, you just wasted £350.

If you do keep them, why don't you take them to a proper custom exhaust place and have them weld a proper link pipe up for you?

I'd start over... With too long one's the only way to make it look right would be to chop them up... And doing that to brand new CF one's... Nope, not a brilliant idea...

the longer pipes look ok in the upswept position mate, akra's are top quality, the fact that they're light shouldn't be an issue. look at it as a good thing, less weight more speed......
worst ways, you can easily cut down the c/f sleeve to get the length you want....

Send 'em back for a refund. You only ordered them as you were told they were 52mm, therefore they sent you an item that is not what you ordered.

Phone them up first to complain about it.

Don't sell them as with consumer rights you well within your rights for a refund. If you do decide to keep them, then all you need to do is chop the link pipes down a bit so the length is down to you then and get a pipe welded onto the links with the right size either end that you require.

I had the same problem with my Ladybird cans. Was told 60mm.....had some link pipes made and by mtc and they didn't fit. Well they would if I bodged them a lot but there was no way I was doing that. I persevered, took the links and cans to a local fabrication shop and showed them my problem. He extended the link pipes to the perfect diameter and length (so I could still use the springs instead of clamps). Obviously not the quality of the welds on the cans but he did a fine job and same day service. They are gp cans but look about the same length on the bike as normal cans due to the extended linkpipes but being upswept and a little inwards they look fine, sound ok too :D
In my case I thought it was worth it as I got the cans for a good price.

It's a bloody nightmare exhaust systems when not using standard parts. I'm going to have problems fitting my Arata's to the Mori headers I just got. I may end up having to trim more of the tapered Arata links :( not ideal but if it means I can keep the Mori links where they clamp onto the rearsets then so be it. I need to measure up and buy the appropriate mandrels or get some custom ones made. It's going to be a right pain, I just know it.

You would have the same issues as me because your links go down as far as the normal header as well. So you would end up cutting them furthur back and modding them to fit the Mori outlets. On the mori pipes the restrictor thingy in the right pipe is furthur back towards the can. So it sits in the link pipe where it mounts to the rearsets. The restrictor thing is also slightly different from the OM one as it's not placed to one side in a half mood shape but goes around in a circular shape. Also there is an inner tapered skin through the pipes. I shall take pics when I get home tomorrow.

Send them back and go again. If you flog them it looks like the profit is hardly worth the hassle.
