Help! Brake caliper pin!

Post by pmcq »

Hello All

Right then, I think I could be in trouble...

In the process of wanting to remove my brake pads, I have managed to round off the end of the pin that goes thru the caliper and holds the brake pads in place. Its not totally roundeded but allen keys seem to slip with applied force. I even managed to snap an allen key trying to open it up. I have sprayed abotu half a can of WD40 into the bugger and it flows through but still no movement - if I get my hands on the mechanic who tightened it up...why I outta...

Anyway I've also tried hacksawing the other end of making a small slot so I could use a screwdriver. This hasnt worked... Please tell me it not time to take the drill out :? I have some good news - I do have a replacement pin so I dont care what happens to the old one!

Any ideas anyone!

Cheers

Maybe apply a bit of heat to the pin, then let it cool down again, might loosen it

Other options
1) angle the allen key slightly. By this I mean if you look at it from the side instead of being in line with the pin its slightly out of line. Makes a tighter fit

2) Get the next size up allen key (imperial ones are favorite coz they're fractionally bigger/smaller) and hammer it into the bolt

3) File a couple of flat spots on the pin and get the b8stard wrench out

4) Finally, cut it off as close to the head as you can so you can get the pads etc out before setting too with the drill

Hope this helps

A torx bit might be better, hammered into said allen bolt ? the hammering , etc might be just what it needs ! Not too heavy though ! You dont want to do any damage to mounts !
