Last minute carb help
Ok, so I have disassembled, cleaned and replace many parts to both my carbs. Now I have reassembled them but have noticed one of the butterflies is open while the other is not. Is it suppose to be like this or do I need to take the linkage arm lose and try something else?

Re: Last minute carb help
That don't sound good. They should both be closed unless you open them via the linkage or the spring mechanism where the carb sync screw is. I suspect that the spring mechanism is springing back unless there is some obvious damage to the linkages and spring. Have a look at the butterfly itself and the shaft it sits on. I think there is a little screw that tightens the butterfly onto the shaft. But this is a precision mechanism and IIRC has to be set with a certain gap when closed. It does not seat fully.
Is it the front or rear carb where it's stuck open. The TPS takes it's reading off the rear carb. Have you had this off at all recently. I'm wondering if that has been put back on right or if there is something up with one of the tabs on the back of the TPS where it attaches to the butterfly.

Yes, I disassemble the carb pack for cleaning. I dont think I have the carb with the TPS sensor on correctly. There are three tabs on the sensor. One small, two large. I set it back up with the small one tab in the groove. This is my only hang up to finishing this.
Re: Last minute carb help

Mmmm, thinking about this it might not explain why one butterfly is open and one is closed.

If you have had everything all apart and have split the carbs into two, I think you need to look at the linkages and how they are connected.

Re: Last minute carb help
do you have a pic of the linkages in the CORRECT postion
??

Re: Last minute carb help
Sorry I haven't no. I had the carbs of my bike today as well.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with the position of the flap when putting the cotter pin back in on the linkage. Page 5-17 in the workshop manual.

Sorry, I cant view that link. Does the screw for the linkage have anything to do with syncing the carbs? I have NOT touched the fuel air screws ( the D screws). Would I need to would about snycing them eventhough I didnt touch them?

Try this one http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9413
Which screw. There is a screw on the rear carb for syncing/balancing and yes once everything is back together you should sync the carbs. Syncing of the carbs affects the position of the butterfly.

Ok, I got the linkage problem figured out. I had it one backwards. Ready for my next problem??? As I was installing the booster joint, I rung it off in the block! wombles me running! I got think they make an easy out small enough to get this thing out.

Re: Last minute carb help
ok, I got the broken booster joint out. Used an eye glass screw driver and a LOT of press. Came right out, also went ahead and ordered another joint. With any luck, I might have it by Saturday. Back to syncing carbs. I did not think I would have to do this. I have been told as long as I you dont make in change in jet size or turn (the D-screw) you would have to. I went ahead and bought the boost joint anyways. I thought the screw on the linkage arm controls the gaps on the butterfly, and not the Air/Fuel mixture screws (D screws). Which is correct?
Re: Last minute carb help
Yep that's what I said. I haven't mentioned fuel mixture screws anywhere.I thought the screw on the linkage arm controls the gaps on the butterfly, and not the Air/Fuel mixture screws
Technically a carb sync should be done any time you remove the carbs and put them back on the bike. Yes Jet changes in particular put things out of sync, but considering you have had the carbs stripped right down and linkages apart. I think a carb sync is good idea, don't you. It's only a two minute job if you have the front vacuum take off which I think is what you call a booster joint.
