Front Brakes

Post by Anotherbikerbabe »

Mine are sh1t hot, I mean I had braided hoses on my last VTR but these ones will stop you on a 2p piece! Dave wants to get a proper look to see if they've been tweaked at the front especially as he said when he rides mine ( he fuels up for me bless or puts it away as we have a 100 foot gravel drive to the garages at back of garden) he said they feel totally different to his braided hoses. He says he has to pull his front brake lever in maybe 1/2" or more to really feel it but mine you simply touch and it is instantly there..They're not just responsive, they're super responsive.. Any ideas guys  ? Would different braided hoses make that much of a difference? or like Dave says, they been tweaked..he's gonna have a look soon ish I think, maybe by end of the week just curious on your thoughts on it :?: ? Please bear this in mind if ever travelling behind me lol...

Calipers In your photo look standard, the F4i, blade, SP ones have 2 pins holding the pads in, so either it has some good pads, and new master cyl, or Dave needs to give his a good clean

His might just need bleeding and cleaning .
The standard front brakes when kept in a good serviceable condition are good

Calipers in your picture are Black.

My brakes are crap. Standard Storm with braided lines. Upgrade is on the cards for me soon... I need an excuse to treat myself to a vacuum pump for bleeding. :biggrin

I always thought braided lines reduced fade when being used hard?. otherwise not much difference ?

And they give a better feel as there is less or none bulging in the lines .

Braided lines improve the feel/reduce sponginess, brake fade is caused by the brakes overheating hence the fade if being used hard

When we had the older VTRs and on the odd occasion I ever rode Daves bike, I hated the feel of it, his brakes eps the back felt like a blummin sponge and felt as if it took forever to hit the brake point! Braided hoses all the way for me,I bought them for his old bike and his now bike. I never looked back once I got them on my old VTR and was glad they were on my newer model.. Can't remember what dave said now but he mentioned ( as per I was doing 20 things at once and wasn't giving it my full attention 8O  ) but he mentioned the length of something??? something being shorter somewhere on mine to his and wanted to get a look to see if changing something on his would improve his somehow ..God knows..I'm sure when he looks properly he'll tell me and I'll tell you lot so we'll see soon enough.. My front pads need changing soon as was an advisory but you only touch that front brake and it reacts instinctively.. hummmm :!: :?:  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just curious cos even my old VTR braided hoses, although defo improved the braking, felt nowhere near as reactive as these ones..

I see you have the standard master cylinder as well. Maybe the callipers are CBR Callipers. Have got anything ground off them to make them fit the mounting point.

the early blade calippers are black and are the same as the storms front and back .
the cbr600 has two pad retaining pins (and needs a little fettlingto make fit) where as the storm and the early blade has one central pad retaining pin

Only a thought, but I'm wondering if Honda changed anything for the brakes on the later model you have Tracy. Of course that theory only works if Dave has the earlier 16ltr fuel tank model, which I believe he has.

**EDIT**
I have just had a look on Ron Ayres site to compare part numbers, I could not see any differences there for calipers or master cylinder.

I tried everything on my early model to get the brakes better, :

braided Hoses
EBC HH pads
calipers cleaned and rebuilt with new seals
Master Cyl cleaned and rebuilt
new fluid

but they never were good enough!!! :(

now with F4i calipers [bigger pistons] and master [bigger piston], EBC HH pads, braided hoses, plus TITAX long lever and Armstrong wave discs.........the brakes are much better, but not 1 finger yet, and I still want more initial bite so I will be changing the pads for Brembo or similar soon
