Epic Fail!!

Post by VenerableArc »

Well Monday I ordered a sheet of carbon fiber look vinyl from Ebay. £9.99 for a single sheet.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151004141063? ... 1423.l2649

Turned up today so thought I would have a shot at wrapping something. Instructions said heat it with a hairdryer to make it more workable. And that worked perfectly. However my choice of items to wrap may have been a little bit adventurous for my skill level  Take a look below

Image

And that is as far as I managed. I cut the sheet in half - one half for each side of the bike. The first sheet got wasted in a matter of minutes! I started from the center but try as I might i just couldn't get it looking good and it ended up sticking to itself and went downhill from there. Started the second sheet and attacked it from a different angle.....started from the one side but has the same issue. I think that it is quite a difficult shape to wrap. even my Mrs who is very Artsy Fartsy failed.

Has anyone accomplished this type of thing on the rear peg assembly?? I think they would look really good wrapped in carbon fiber.

Oh well...time for a curry and a

Happy friday night peeps

Matt

Yeah too right. I thought about maybe doing the clock surround but I have my eye on a set of R1 and CBR clocks (depends which goes cheapest). Then I was going to do the top yoke but didn't wanna do it in situ and couldn't be arsed to strip it off. I will buy another sheet and have a think of how is best to do them!!

Now this is why I haven't attempted carbon wrap. I'd be bloody useless, I find it hard enough wrapping parcels.

At least you had a go at it. Take at look at this link by shinn281, I'm not sure he has done a rear footpeg hanger, but he has done an amazing job IMHO, so perhaps he can give you some tips:-

you should try using real carbon fibre its 100 times harder.....
as for dipping, the end result is like the carbon fibre look huggers...
as for wrap, you choose a tough item to start with.
heres a few tips.
you'll need these.
heat gun or hair dryer
craft knife or scapel
white spirit
lots of patients.
you need to clean the item with white spirit or something similar.
cut a large enough piece of wrap to begin with.
take it slow, start with an item with few curves.
don't be afraid to pull the wrap back off and start again.
don't pull to hard on the wrap or it might tear.
don't give up buddy.....
