Time for new chain & sprockets but standard or 1-1

Post by Image »

Time for me to get new chain and sprocket but should I go for standard or an arrangement of -1 front and +1 rear for even more acceleration. Is standard more reliable and does it make the chain last longer? How much more difference does the -1 front and +1 make?

It's really down to personal choice and what roads you spend most of your time riding on. I like the + 2 on the rear sprocket only, others will probably say different. This has been a topic very recently discussed, so try a search.

Here's one link I've just found:- http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... et#p290442

Yes I've read that already but I wanted someone to tell me how much difference does it really make. Is it a noticeable difference.
Also what's the difference between -1 front and +1 rear and just +2 on the rear?
Does +2 cause less wear on the chain than -1 front and +1?

You know what... there are so many varied opinions on chain and sprockets that it one of those thing one just has to try and if you like then great, if not, then change for something else.

This will give you the best idea http://www.gearingcommander.com//
There some interesting info on that site.

Hi ive got standard front and 43 on the rear and i love it, drive out of the bends is far better but you do lose a bit of top end.

I worked out that 4000 prm was about 70mph standard and 75mph with the 43 tooth on, so it reads about 5mph quicker than its actually going (not a bad thing)

however in a straight blast off the line compared to my mates standard set up it was quicker through the gears, it does though wheelie easier if you give it a fistful away from the lights and out of bends personally i love that bit!!! :biggrin
