Help, Where has all my spark gone??

Post by Brinz »

Hi everyone, one of my VTR's is giving me the run around at the moment, Was running great in the past but is now very very hard to start and only seems to be running on one cyclinder. Then looses spark completely  . I was thinking maybe the pick up coil, stand switch, or a dud cdi?? :confused
Its a 2005 model with the HISS system,
Why would you do that???

Work your way back from the spark plugs, caps, coils etc.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Is this on the same bike as you recently done the CCTs on? If not then, by going by you description above I would Start with changing the plugs. They can fail from time to time or the spark weakens which can cause difficulties. Check to see if both have a healthy spark. Then move onto to the coils where there is a good chance the fault is with one of them.

You say it seems to be running on one cylinder. For a quick test, try swapping the front and rear coil with each other and see if the running on one cylinder reverses to the opposite cylinder. This will prove whether one of the coils is faulty or not. Otherwise you will have to get a multimeter out.

I would also check the the voltage at the battery terminals using a multi-meter when the bike is running. It should read somewhere between 13.5 and 15.5 volts.

Yes, side stand switches have been known to fail. If you have a workshop manual or if not have a look in the Workshop Knowledgebase for a wiring diagram. From that you should be able to by-pass the switch as a temporary measure, just to see if that's what's causing the problem.

There's a wiring diagram in this link, I'm not sure if the wires will be the same colour though with your bike being newer.
