Helicoil

Any one used these I've just ordered a set to repair the threads in my forks for the mudguard was wondering if anyone's used helicoils and of so any do's or don'ts when using them

Have done various jobs with them, pretty easy to use to be honest, just make sure you drill the hole central, if you break out of the steel bolt, into the ally leg, it will immediately wonder off to the size.

If you are using a hand drill, it's worth using something like a 2.5 or 3 mm drill, start a hole, then if you are a mm off centre you can move the drill to an angle to drill back towards the centre, once you have a small hole dead centre you can then drill with an intermediate size centrally so you have a nice hole ready for the special size helicoil drill.

After that it's easy as you will be tapping into alloy not steel.

The old bolts are all out but the treads are non existent when I got the bike it had m5 threaded bar glued into the old m6 holes lol

And that's only the forks you would all laugh at some of the other bodge jobs that I found on my tzr

Dead easy them just drill it with the supplied right size drill then tap, getting the snapped bolts out is the hard bit.

That's what I'm hoping local firm wanted £15 per tread and I need 4 doing but the helicoils kit can repair 25 threads and it was £8 thought it was worth a go
