tapping noise when engine running any ideas? sorted!!!

Post by frudd28 »

Hi guys been to work on bike last couple o days and can hear a tapping whilst riding!!
When I stop it still does it but only until tickover slows down and then sometimes stops but sometimes carries on
went to local motorcycle shop for him to have a listen but typically when started didn't do it
he said it sounded sweet as a nut and tbh it does when this annoying tapoing is absent he is the mechanic and owns numerous bikes inc an sp1 so think he knows his stuff!!
Anyway, just puttin it out there to see if anyone has experienced similar?
Cheers

I have a tapping noise on mine too. It could be valves or even cam chain adjustment. What CCT's have you got fitted?

These motors all make odd noises to some extent. I would be more concerned if it had no noises at all, which I believe indicates tightening of the valves.

Could it be that your hearing it when the engine is cold hence the reason it was gone by thetime you got to the garage. Don't forget things expand when hot so quieten down. But do, do you CCT's if they have not been done. If anything it gives you peace of mind.

Ive done stopper mod on standard ones
was unsure if maybe valve noise but would've thought it would do it consistently all the time not just most of the time
the valves was adjusted in serv hist at ? Miles will have to check

Hi it seems not to do it as often when started first thing in mornin when cold
in fact it doesn't do it at all when just started only after I set off and carries on after coming to a stop for an unspecified time then goes, starts again after setting off
I'm sure its nothing terminal but just a bit annoying not knowing what it is

That's interesting...so it's an intermittent sound when warmed up. A sound (video) clip would be good if poss so we can listen. It's hard to diagnose sounds without hearing it. It's most probably nothing as these V Twins do make some unusual noises compared to an IL4 and take a bit of getting used to. Maybe you could have a listen to some other Storms to compare against.

Right checked cct's and they fine still got tension in springs but I had already done stopper mod anyway, balanced carbs with help from forum and done tps mod just while I was at it and got it to 510ohm without having to do any mods to holes etc Bonus!!
will get back out on it next couple o days n try and suss where noise is coming from
my old man says it sounds like cam related but as I said before if was valves that needed shimming up you would think it would happen all the time
It almost sounds like a hydraulic tappet noise like on a ford cvh engine when they haven't run for a while and the oil has drained out of them?
Was wonderin if oil wasn't getting pumped around properly but then you would have thought oil light would come on?
If I cant sort it I will have to take it to shop n let them have a look
any suggestions would be grateful I did try n get a sound clip by tying phone to top yoke and recording whilst riding but just wind noise :(

Hi guys/girls after scratching head for last couple of months trying to figure out what this blasted noise is I've finally sussed it!!! I did stopper mod last winter with the very helpful guide on here, followed it to the letter and all was well the only difference being when you back one of 1/4of a turn and the other1/2 a turn, this was because where the tensioner was automatically was in between lock of points so I turned them back slightly more than recommended, this being where the problem was.
I did valve clearences last week just to rule that out and was thinking bout fitting manual cct's whilst at it but turns out that extra bit of backing of was giving enough space for metal rod inside front cct to shake/rattle/tap inside cct whenever it felt like it!!
Lengthened rods to give bout 5-7mm max deflection on cam chain and all is now well so in effect set auto's to same settings as manuals would be
would just like to say thanks to all on here as knowledge has been invaluable in sorting it was gonna cost£150 just to get clearances checked

Bring a tent, kip over, I'll fire up the barbie and toast a chicken.
Easy.
