Potentially stupid fork brace idea!

Post by Jamoi »

When I was angle grinding the wombles out of my top yoke, I had an idea... Uh oh

Is there enough clearance underneath the bottom yoke to mount a top yoke? And would it help the bottom yoke to stiffen the fork legs a little?

I will be investing in a proper fork brace for the lowers but just curious, as I've heard people say the bottom yoke is so skinny 'it's a weak point' as far as fork stiffness goes.

I see no reason not to try it!

That'll work ok, just trade off the dadded stiffness against added weight, same as you have to with USD forks.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Yeah, it should clear all parts I think... And yes, it should increase rigidity somewhat, at least as far as the twisting motion, and generally adding a longer clamping point, although it's not in the ideal location to take up too much outward flex in the stanchions, which is what the 'traditional' brace does, as it's located at the 'moving interface' between the two parts...

I say, go for it... It surely won't cause any damage, as you can't bottom the forks out that much, and it should help... Exactly how much remains to be seen though...

Thanks for your thoughts on my potentially stupid idea, I think I'll pimp the yoke up with the grinder & bolt it on.

I'll let you know if I experience potentially stupid results or positive results!

I'd say this shouldn't be termed a fork brace though, more the equivalent to the beefed up triples that our resident CNC machinist showed some porn shots of a while back...

Here's my mate's KLR with an angle iron fork brace - cheap as chips!

Genius! Must be a fair chunk of weight though

That front brake lever is frankly scary!!! Although I've done a few bodges when I was younger, I snapped my throttle cable on my AR125 at the handlebar end and just pulled the wire to accelerate! And filled my C90 rear tyre with underwear as I couldn't afford an inner tube!

In his defence - his lever broke when he was in Turkey and the bodge got him back to blighty. He just puts it back like that when at shows.
