We ran a trial for this in the F1 car wheels about 9 years ago.. and it never went anywhere for the same observations you had!
Why ask... sometime you just go to do it and find out?

Newman-Hass team ran the system in Cart racing in the States years ago, only on the oval races IIRC & I only remember it being on for one season or even only one race.
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...
