Is it that big that it only requires a semi to do that? I require a full-on usually to even get near my face :/Jamoi wrote:Your front cct is going to pop out and punch you in the face on your way to Ali's.

My understanding is that in most cases on I4 bikes, the CCT is a working or fail scenario as well. What is actually happening on those bikes is the CCT has failed (like on the VTR) but instead of one CCT for two cylinders, they have one CCT for 4 cylinders. What this means is that the cam chain has much more consistent and regulated "tugs" on it as each cylinder fires and there is less of a slack period so it is much, much harder for it to skip over the gears. On the VTR there is an uneven firing order from the v-twin as well as half as many cylinders, causing long pauses of slack in the chains. This means it is much easier to skip over the cam gears. So the rattling on an I4 bike is indeed a completely failed CCT (not just a warning) but because of the design of the motor it is not catastrophic.mattycoops43 wrote:We all know VTR CCT's have catastrophic failure, but can I point out that on many other bikes, the first sign of a cct going is a rattly chain caused by the spring going weak. this CAN happen on a storm, in fact when I got my storm it had an original cct that was doing exactly that. Changed to manuals and all been fine since.
Just pointing out it is not a fail or be perfect scenario, they can go through their normal lifespan and then weaken off.
Even if this problem is the CCT's going, and they break tonight on the way to Al's I'm not selling anything. This bike will simply just need fixing before I use it again. I fell in love, truly, on the trackday and even restricted it's more than I hoped for (I had low expectations in fairness). You'd have to make a REALLY good offer. Sort of around the SP-1/2 price rangechric wrote:Let them go bang ill buy your fairing and tank then

In theory if you were lucky the broken spring would back out slowly and you might have a few minutes or days of warning, but in most cases I would guess the "warning noise" is some other noise coming from the bike.
I could be completely off on this, but from reading all of the different failure cases, this seems to be the best explanation for me.
Manual CCT's will not fail. They can be installed incorrectly (backing back out or timing issues), but I don't count this as a failure. Auto CCT's can back out as well if you don't tighten the two bolts enough. The rear wheel can come loose if you don't tighten it down, etc...

I'll take your anecdotal evidence into account as I continually build my story about how the world works!
Still wouldn't chance waiting for a loose or dying noise, though... and I have a hard time believing that any decent quality spring steel will lose it's springiness over time...
