May have to sell my storm :-(

Post by Shauned71 »

Pretty gutted but it's looking like i'm gonna have to sell my Storm. Money hasn't been great for some time but iv'e always just about kept my head above water... until now. Was given a nice tax bill a few weeks ago that first made me think that I should sell but things just keep getting worse. I was out of work and job hunting a few months back.. struggling to find work I decided to take a gamble and go back in my garage. At the time i had a bit of work lined up and although I was going to be on a low wage with help from the council towards my rent I would still be able to keep my self going. Main reason I went self employed was to simply get out of the dole queue so to make me feel better, was getting depressed struggling to find work. Was hoping that it would come to more but if work dried up and I was only self employed for a few months or so... it was a break from unemployment and tbh a change I needed. As it is work is quiet but the main problem.. now the council have finally worked out my entitlement it turns out I get bugger all so right now can't even make ends meet.

So... what I was wondering, just incase I do have to go this route.. what would be a fair asking price for my bike?
Bike is a 1998 with around 44k on clock.

Although clean it's not immaculate but as far as I know it want's for nothing.

Since I bought the bike in late Jan iv'e fully serviced the bike fitting oil/oil filter, plugs, air filter, new EBC HH pads and new wheel bearings all round, new cct's 2k miles ago, it came with a different R/R so no issues there.
New coloured braided lines all round, R&G bar ends, CNC black levers, double bubble screen, hugger, fender extender, seat cowl, spare seat and spare screen. Shortened ART cans plus I have a pair of near mint Scorpion cans with removable baffles, new Iridium rear indicators. Only one key but one fits all, alarm/immobiliser plus an extra alarm fitted.
Couple months tax.. MOT to next March (ish) although now worries about putting a new MOT on her.. she WILL pass with no advisories.

I know there are plenty of bikes for sale on Ebay but have noticed many being relisted.. so wouldn't have a clue as to what is actually selling and for how much. Would appreciate any input. Really don't want to sell my bike but gotta look at the bigger picture.. If i do advertise it then I want to try and price it to sell.

Problem is its the wrong side of summer to start selling mate

I bought mine with 28k, motd/taxed - immaculate and extensive service history with papers/receipts to match, revolution fork job/hagon shock, hugger, bagster tank bag and probably other bits ive forgot

I paid 1700 quid which was a bit high, but then again it was virtually perfect, 2 miles from my door and getting to the start of summer

best of luck and dont listen to the wombles on here who would offer you 600 quid lol

sh1t man - hope things look up for you. That's the downside of owning one of these I reckon - they are not just a bike. Fingers crossed you turn a corner somehow.

Can't the Taxman just wait. How about paying them in instalments...say, a pound a week  The thing is... selling the Storm is not a massive amount and probably only equals two spray jobs worth. You don't want to sell it. What would the Taxman do if you didn't have it or any money. I'm sure they wouldn't send bailiffs around or anything like that. There must be some kind of long term payment scheme they can can up with for people going through some kind of hardship.

Thanks all.. hoping things pick up too, just gotta keep my fingers crossed I suppose.
And yea.. wrong time of year it is but as much as I don't want to sell I'm not going to fight to keep the bike and risk getting into a worse situation, even though i am tempted too lol It's just bad luck that my situation has changed at this time of year. As for the TAX.. they ain't really a problem, all they do is add to my problem as well as make me feel worse about things. Have spoken to them and they seem quite reasonable about the situation. My main problem is paying my rent right now on my house. I have a pretty good landlord... He doesn't chase me every month for rent.. I usually drop in to see him when passing and chuck him 2, 3 sometimes more months worth of rent at a time. At the mo im 4 months behind.. I have a couple months worth in the bank that I will be emptying tomorrow to pay him which in turn basically leaves me skint but even then I will still be behind by 2 months... The reason for this... I had an estimate of what housing benefit I would get going into work on a low wage like I did and it was this estimate which helped me decide to have a go and go back self employed again. I was given a figure that paid a fair chunk of my rent per month and I was hoping that this money would help keep me going while I got things off the ground.. where things have gone wrong I don't know but now that the council have properly worked out my entitlement it turns out I ain't gonna get bugger all.. well nothing worth having anyway. It's taken them near 3 months to work this out and meanwhile my benefit claim was suspended so now instead of getting a back payment which of would of filled the gap.. i'm now left 2 months behind on rent... and ofc it will only get worse as each month goes by.

So, gonna have a think about things over the weekend and make a decision one way or the other Monday. Want to get an idea for a reasonable price to ask for the bike so that if i do advertise it then hopefully it sells... as much as I don't want to give it away I can't afford to hold onto it just to try and make an extra few quid. Iv'e also still got the SP1 tucked away.. gonna advertise that thing too.. and then I have another I can sell... I have about 90% maybe a bit more of a 1938 Velocette 350 MAC. At the moment it is in bits but it wouldn't take a lot to repaint and to put together what I do have.. wouldn't take a lot to finish off after that so could make a fine project for someone.. the down side of that idea is I don't have the money to get the damn thing together right now.

So.. will just have to wait and see how things go. If i can keep my head above water be it selling or if by chance work picks up until new year then I will be happy. Work usually picks up for me other side of xmas, and if I can get back on my feet I can look for another bike to buy ready for next summer

The problem with tour storm is it will go for what someone wants to pay for it. I would suggest striiping some if the after market parts of and selling these straight away. This will help in the short term and secondly if you sell the bike eventually most aftermarkets parts don't increase the bikes value they just make it a better deal.

Its worth considering. Ps sorry to hear about ya situation and I hope it resolves itself without having to sell storm.

Thats a good idea Ging500, hope you don't have to sell it though Shauned.

It's a lovely looking storm, esp the polished frame and orange paint.

Good luck mate

Not one for bumping up older posts but seeing as I started this one i thought i'd finish it... plus excuse to say heya  I'm still alive  Wasn't having a very good time last month and have been ill with a bad chest infection most of this month... I kinda get a bit unsociable when feeling down and fed up hence why I haven't been around.

To update you on my storm which is still my storm and come next year will still be my storm... things have changed a little bit money wise and it's looking promising that it won't be going anywhere anytime soon. In fact... I'm just about to buy another. Deciding I didn't want the hassle or commitment I have punted out the SP1 I bought a couple months back as is which in turn has helped me square a few bills up and myself and my Brother are going halves and buying the other storm as a winter project be it break up or tidy up and sell next year as weather breaks. There's also a bit of a plot twist here... this storm has been on the e of the bay for a while and I have been staring at it in my list of saved rubbish I look at and wish i could buy... and then like a miracle all was clear... although the photos were not the best I spotted it.. 1998 storm with a 19lt tank fitted (not to mention new wavy discs, new seat cover, new double bubble screen and a few other bits fitted) Upgrades for my bike!!! WOO HOO!!!

Don't know if any or how many of you may of seen my post on facebook..... Asked on there if you tell the difference between 16 and 19lt tanks going by a photo... no one actually confirmed that you can, but.... indeed you can. This may be common knowledge, I don't know i'm only assuming by the replies i had that most peeps don't know the difference. The top of the tank forward of the petrol cap is a different shape. So.. anyway, good for me with my sharp eyes will swap a few bits over on the bikes and then decide what to do with what is left... only factor that may change my plans a bit.. the other bike has half the mileage on it compared to mine so end product will be the same but... which bike will stay and which will go.. we will see. Either way this now means I am 2 thirds towards having what I need to do my major mods to my bike over the winter. Have twin head lamps to fit... not a direct fit twin lamp conversion but something more along the lines of a modern blade set up which will mean me customising the fairings I have to take the new lamps plus making the fairings into a one piece and will now have the larger tank for a tad more range. Just got to decide on which belly pan I will buy and that's it, all other bits I want to do are either cheap or just time consuming.

So... hoping that nothing drastic happens and things keep picking up for me it's roll on new year, I can't wait to pull my bike a part

Well there is light at the end of the tunnel so to speak, just fingers crossed that things keep going ok. Really hope so because i'm gathering my ideas of what mods I want to do to bike over the winter, regardless to which bike I end up with I have my end result stuck in my head now

Will keep you all posted but you will soon know if things are going ok if another post pops up in the 'pimp my ride' section
