Another Newbie

Post by Woody_100 »

Hi guys,
Excellent site you have here.
I'm hoping I can ask you all the usual dumb questions and get away with, as there seems to be a wealth of info/experience here that I may well need to tap into.
I'm just about to hand over cash for a '98 Firestorm in the next couple of days. Fantastic bike. :D
My previous bike was a TRX, so I've been a twin man for about 10yrs.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, the seller told me that it had had a complete top end re-build about 10K miles ago. Its on 27K now.
After reading your posts, it sounds like it was more than likely the CCT.
Should I be wary????
I really love this bike. The moneys burning a huge hole in my pocket too.

I'm paying £2k

Should I???? or should I look elsewhere? £2K is all I got.

Thanks for any help/pointers. I may be here for quite a while
Here we go again..............

Welcome aboard Woody. Of course you should buy it, you know it makes sense. As far as your cct's go, these things can break at any time or mileage, they dont seem to follow any trend. Get them changed if your not sure.
Rich.

Thanks for the quick replies guys,
I had a feeling you would advise me to buy cos I know none of you are in the least bit biased eh?

Another thing I forgot to mention was, that the bike has new chain and sprockets, the rear being 2 teeth more than standard.
That would explain how the bike seemed really quick up to 80ish, as that was as fast as I went on the test run.

I read just now that the speedo is driven off the gearbox :?
I never considered that......... so how fast will the speedo be reading?
I guess that the pick-up being at the gearbox could be a good thing as I'll always be inside the speed limit for any given speedo reading.

Please view the above as the first in a whole raft of newbie questions that I'll be hitting you with.

PS She's not a fast one as I've read that red onces don't go so well as yellow or black

Its a known fact that the coeffecient drag factor of yellow is far far higher than Red. So physics has it all sorted......yellows a drag!

What other colour could there be for a FIREstorm.......its got to be red.

Good luck with the purchase anyway. You'll have a big grin on yer face after riding it. I still have!

Good choice, Woody 1, and to think you've already got the colour:speed ratio sorted out.

Mine's done over 65,000km (since I only get off it to sleep) and the CCTs are only just asking for attention now. You can bodgie things so the Kawasaki ones will fit, which is what I'm doing (well... having done...), or you can put new Honda ones on & still not know when they're going to kick the bucket.

Whatever you choose, you've done the right thing by joining this forum. Heaps of advice around. You can usually tell the wise bits pretty easily... Welcome aboard! 8)

 Welcome Woody
If it's done 10K after a top end rebuild that should be good enough to say it's going to be alright
Go on...Buy it. You know you want it :P

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

I'm definetly gonna buy it..............
Loud cans eh? well its already got a pair of pretty new Microns which sound really sweet without being too loud.

Got an ace price for insurance too, from Bennetts. Am I allowed to say that?

As soon as I upload a pic, I'll post that too.

Cheers,
Woody

Good one! I've just had Microns put on my storm & I agree 100%. The tone is perfect. A friend who works as a service manager for a large Honda dealer here told me that the Micron manufacturers have a deal with Honda & that the pipes are specifically made with Honda in mind. I even got a compliment from a Harley rider this evening 8O :? !
