Snapped exhaust stud removal
Snapped exhaust stud removal
One of my front exhaust studs has snapped, leaving about 10mm ish sticking out to get hold of. I have an idea as to how to get it out, but am open to suggestions from others who've done it before. My plan, for what its worth, is;
1. Put a nut onto the pretruding thread from one of the others ( this nut will be sacrificed ) with plenty of loctite. Leave overnight. Already done this bit.
2. Using a 2-3mm drill bit, drill through the nut and stud, untill the drill bit has emerged through the other side of the nut.
3. Leaving the drill bit in place, get a socket on the nut and turn. Hopefully the drill bit will make it all turn as one.
Anyone got a better idea ??

I usually weld a bit of bar to the stud. a combination of the heat and the leverage from the bar has only failed me once

Re: Snapped exhaust stud removal
Borrow or buy a cheap arc welder.
It'll be easier, and the heat from welding an oversize nut onto teh bit that's sticking out will loosen it anyway.
Then you can turn the nut with a spanner.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Well I thought mine was going to be a walk in the park. I had about the same amount of stud left & all the tricks failed. Now I'm left with a flush broken stud & have to do the only safe option & remove the head & drill. Waiting for the head gasket to arrive before proceeding.
Re: Snapped exhaust stud removal
I find using a mig welder to weld the nut on better as its more controllable! This has never failed for me even with the stud snapped flush! Hire a welder if need be

Re: Snapped exhaust stud removal
You could try one of these with an impact driver it will save on all this welding lark & I can genuinely say it gripped the stud damn tight.

Remember to keep using the impact driver don't be tempted to use a ratchet after the impact driver fails to budge it. In hindsight I should have walked away & come back later & have another go. The lateral force is what sheared it in the end using a ratchet.

I don't even bother to try and undo them on the front I just use the nut splitter much faster and cheaper :-)
