Right then I followed the hints and tips and stripped the bike down enough to get the CCTs out.
I made a locking key as per the Haynes manual and withdrew the rear CCT.
I made a hole in a piece of wood to take the roll pin and used a ground off little Allen key to drift out the roll pin.
Tap, Tap, Tap and the roll pin came out but FFFFFFFFFFFF the key fell out and the plunger unwound.
So now I have to press the pin back in, reinstall the CCT and then start all over again.
Any idea what I should do to not have the key fall out again? Duck tape maybe?
Or not bother and just hunt down manual CCTs?

Hi Moocher, i'm in Colchester. If you would like a hand, i'm free today. The stopper mod is quite easy and I have some 8mm ally rod.. if you just want to get riding. Or if you order some manuals, I can help you when they arrive.
Putting the cct back together and in the bike takes as long as I took me to write this ;) also, I think it's mentioned somewhere, a bit of duct tape over the key will stop it popping out while working on the cct.

duct tape on the key is what I do to make sure the key stays in, and I also do the measurement of the plunger shaft length before I tap the pin out, then you can set it back the that length again if it moves.

I take you're doing the Stopper Mod. In the link below (titled "How to remove and refit CCT's on the Firestorm") at number (10) it explains about using tape to hold the key in place. It looks like I need to add that bit to the Stopper Mod link

Chris.(10) Unscrew the small bolt in the end of the rear CCT and remove it along with the alloy sealing washer. Next turn the screw head inside the CCT clockwise two full turns, lock it off in position using a locking key. The Haynes Workshop Manual shows you how to make a simple locking key. Tape the key in place once you've locked the tensioner off, as you don't want the key jumping out.

Many thanks for your kind responses.
One problem I didn't mention is that I am suffering from an eye problem. GP thinks it's temporary ( I hope he's right) I have blurred vision and cannot go into sunlight or any bright lights. I took my notebook PC into the garage to refer to as I was working on the bike.
However even the screen was a bit too bright and I maybe didn't manage to read all the instructions properly.
Today my eyes are a bit worse so I'm not able to work on the bike.
I think I have read all the posts above and I very much appreciate your kind words and offers of help.
What's even worse is that I have not been to the shops lately and have now run out of biscuits and am getting low on milk. So I would not be able to extend the hospitality that would be deserved.

about 2pm the old eyes switched on a bit and I had to choose Telly or Bike, Bike or Telly? And then .......back in the garage I made a Mk11 CCT cradle. Me not having three hands I feel the need to support the little critter and hold it still while I reinsert the roll pin without bending something. I managed to reinsert the reassembled CCT and bolt it up before my eyes blurred up again.

Now that's a good idea. The cradle may even catch the pin for you as it's knocked out. If it fell on the floor you would need more than eyes to find it again.

I held the roll pin with long nose pliers and tapped it with a hammer and once started I finished off with a nail punch.
It will have to be modified when I get the CCT out again ( with the key taped in place) as the piston will be shorter than it was when I put the roll pin back in.
But yes I fully intend to drill a catch hole in the appropriate place.

As the key has popped out. I would wind the tensioner all the way in, re-fit, remove key, turn the crank over a few time to set the tension, and start again using Sirches guide

Wind the key clockwise 1/2 turn or 1/4 which ever it is and start from scratch. At least you know you going to get the right length bar then. Just make sure to tape the key in good and proper this time so it don't fall out.
