Need a piece of steel tube.....

Post by leevtr »

....Of sufficient strength and diameter to knock my lower steering bearing down. Anyone know where to get some, or have a bit already, and fairly local. Only need to do the last 5 mm, but the stuff | have isn't man enough and I'm losing he will to live with it.

if you have some universal axle stands for your car [or if a neighbour has] the upper section of that works a treat.

also don't put a block of wood between the hammer and the tube as it absorbs to much of the initial impact and the brg stops moving before it is bottomed out

lee,
2 more obvious bits of wisdom tha ti guess you have already done, but pays to check.

use the old bearing as a spacer/cushion between the drift and the nice new bearing.

oh and you did remember to fit the lower seal didn't you?

I ended up using a big adjustable wrench and hitting that, moving the jaws around every couple of whacks so the bearing went on evenly. Otherwise riding around and going over a few bumps will knock things into place, then re adjust the tension.

Using the old bearing upside down on top of the new one.you can grip the lower yoke and old bearing in a vice and use the vice to do the work.
Apply pressure to one side then the other.
Just before the new bearing is completely seated, centralise the seal; once it's home you won't be able to move it.

Easy, effortless and you don't hit your fingers with hammers.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Use the inner race of the old bearing and a piece of tube that will slide onto it. You wont find a tube to fit exactly onto your new bearing, been there before.

It's even easier to just use the but at the top and a big washer over the pipe if needed... No hammers involved... Just smoothly tighten down the pipe and bearing...
