Ground Clearance

Post by adstar »

Hello,

Well I did my first track day last week at Llandow (Wales).

It was really good but I was having issues with ground clearance. My hero blobs took a bit of a bashing.

I have read that the next thing to touch down is the exhaust? Some questions:

If you have high level cans does this help of is it the link pipes/headers that touch down?
If high exhausts will help I could just take the hero blobs off?

or fit different pegs?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
Adam

My pet topic!!!

My trial and error method

If you take the hero blobs off the next thing to go down is the standard exhaust can
So you get some high levels.
Next you get concerned by the amount of footpeg disappearing so you buy some M&P tapered pegs
These increase ground clearance
Then you discover cheap sticky tyres can be bought from racer types for £40 a pair
And the tapered pegs are now taking a hammering
Being a tight-wad the next step is to remove the pivot part of the pegs and bolt them directly into the footpeg mount
This works a treat, all the feel and ground clearance of aftermarket footpegs but only costs £18.99
Then the exhaust header starts touching down
So it gets booted til it moves a bit

And thats where I am at the moment

If you want any pics or advice, let me know

cheers for the reply...

I didn't want to just take the the hero blobs off as std exhaust would take a bashing.

How much extra clearance do you get with no hero blobs and high exhaust???

some pics of these tapered footpeg would be cool...

I am nearly off the tyres though - where is the limit between leaning more/needing more ground clearance and riding different lines etc?

some pics of me at Llandow 8)

High exhaust completely removes that from the ground clearance equation
Removing hero blobs only improves things marginally, see first pic for comparison

Next, a couple of pics of the fixed ones. Basically they're tapered ones but bolted directly to the hanger, rather than the wobbly mounting

From the pics of you at Llandow I'd say you need to get your body off the bike more, possibly at the expense of less elbow-off the seat.
The aim is to get weight to the inside and upwards. Thats why most of the magazine shots have the journos lying flat on the tank -more lean angle for same speed

Cheers for the pics!

Does this mean the foot pegs won't fold up??

Cheers,

It does indeed
Which is a VERY good thing coz the feedback you get from these is superb and on floppy foldy ones I nearly fell off the inside exiting druids at Oulton -nearly every lap!!!!!

And no, that isn't an issue wrt grounding out coz the exhaust headers go down first!!
Yes really 8)

i second that ben, i have no right hand hero blobs left and half my peg has been worn down, as has the stock cans....answer....new cans and pegs like ben says....and maybe if your extreme re-angling the header pipes?
