Engine tapping noise

Post by Scott24 »

Hi, I'm new on here so here goes lol

I've just bought my first 98 plate vtr with 7700 miles !
Been out 3 times and noticed a tapping noise but it's intermittent ,
It's gone now but at the time it was loud ! Any info on this would be much appreciated thanks

Greetings

Have the chain and sprockets been replaced since new or adjusted?

If you have a dangly maladjusted chain it can rub along the left link pipe.

Hi
It's not the chain as it's on its stand , sounds like it's around engine casing area
But can't be certain it's whereabouts

Is it when the engine is cold? And does it have manual or automatic cam chain tensioners?

Does the noise disappear when you pull the clutch lever in. We need more info or a sound clip to help here as noises are very difficult to diagnose over the internet.

Mate get ur ccts done, or for time being do the stopper mod. There are step by srep instructions on here. Stopper mod is easy and quick if u dont have money or time to fit manuals. Thats what i would have done. Im sure one of the experts will give you more info on other potential causes

Hi scott there is issues with auto cct's wise to do stopper mod or manual conversation.
Sounds like you have a good low mileage bike.

I will also add that mine started to make a knocking noise when starting cold, then heard it when warm so changed my cct's. Since then ive never heard it again. My bike only done 11k, full service history and is 01 plate. I know doing full conversion is time consuming and the cost of tensionetd, plus no riding till you get them. Do a stopper mod and know your safe

Loosen the bolts supporting the link pipes and silencer and jiggle it to how you want it, then tighten up.

Has it been crashed at some point?

Exhaust straight now , rear foot peg bracket was slightly bent pushing the exhaust inwards , quick bend out wards and exhaust looks sweet !!
