Think about an 6mm thread for example with a 0.5mm pitch, you tighten it up a bit to much and strip the thread without having to actually turn that hard, just to hard for that particular bolt (am I painting a picture at all??), now think of the same bolt with a 1.5mm pitch and you over-tighten it, you would have had to turn it considerably harder than you would the 0.5mm pitch to get the same effect. If this makes any sense at all, you should be able to envisage the larger pitch coping with a larger force being applied.
Obviously there are other factors to consider when being anal such as size and modulus' of the material, well, actually they're probably the main ones!
