Popping back through the carb(s).

Post by Bob Monkhouse »

Hi there, as I'm new to this forum I'll say firstly thanks for the add and secondly my apologies if I'm on the wrong section.
I have a 97(P) Firestorm which was kindly given to us by a good friend :D . We love the bike but it has an annoying habit of popping back through the carbs/air filter box at lights etc.On occassion the fire goes out and leaves me embarrassed having to fire the bike up again before we can get going. I've spoken to a local bike repair shop and he has come across it quite a few times but has never found a solution. It seems to be a problem particular to Firestorms, some do it,some don't. Could anyone shed light on this,I would love to solve this as it is the only thing that lets the bike down.(Some would say the colour lets it down but I quite like pink).

Hi Bob - greetings to the forum.

Carb fart is perfectly normal just ensure that idle is at around 1,200 so it lessens the occurrences of low speed stalling.

Bung some pics of your pinky storm and put your approx location up in your profile.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

as above
it can be helped by getting the bikes carbs set up as best as possible, tps set to 500, carbs cleaned and balanced.
but so far I've not been able to totally eliminate it, others have so I've read, I choose to learn to live with it...
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Hi bob. Mine seemed to do this and stall when cold. I have since turned up idle to about 1200rpm as it was at 900-1000. This helps once warmed up, but when cold I find I have to hold a steady throttle at about 1500 or it stalls. Unfortunately for the bike its left out in the rain if at work or the girl friends which doesn't help.

After you set the idle speed, TPS and sync the carbs, if it still happens try opening the pilot screw 1\4 turn.

Mine seldom if ever does it and my idle is set at around 900. Make sure that the carbs are balanced, the airfilter clean etc. and the mixture set up properly. Setting the idle higher might remove the symptoms but not cure the underlying cause.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Agree!! All upping the idle does is mask over it....and burn more fuel. It's tune up time.

Thanks for the advice lads, I've put the tickover up to 1400rpm at the moment and will get the carbs balanced at some point. This is something I've never done before so any advice forthcoming will be appreciated. I'm used to setting carbs up on tuned Lambrettas (which isn't easy believe me)so I'm not a complete idiot.I know I'll need a pair of vac guages but whats to do from there? And er, whats the tps?

If you look at the bottom of cyberarls posts, any one, there are links. Click the bottom one cyborg links and all off the different posts to do everything on these bikes are here. Tps- throttle position sensor. For both the tank and air box comes off and carbs off. Good two hours of fun! Lol
