Exhaust Repacking
Exhaust Repacking
I know this was done a bit recently, but who's used what and how did they rate it ?? I know Carl did his recently using loose fill, and I know theres blanket type also. My exhaust seems to be less deep boom, more of a bark, and I prefer the former personally.
I'd rather pay a bit more for good stuff than buy the cheapest going.
A complete contradiction though to that last statement, whats the difference between exhaust specific packing and something like rockwool....I'm guessing heat resistance ??

If it's a carbon or ti can I'd use loose fit like Carl did but with stainless or ali I use blanket mainly because titanium will discolour under heat and carbon will crack so I've found loose fit best for them .
Stainless or ali are more durable and sound deeper with blanket packing.

Seams good and mine sounds fantastic nice and deep without and barking

Re: Exhaust Repacking
The other beauty of loose fill is that you can control the density to fine tune heat insuation/sound attenuation. I made sure the inlet side where it's hottest was packed as dense as I could get it. The rolls create air gaps in the roll a bit like puff pastry so don't fill/pack as well.If it's a carbon or ti can I'd use loose fit like Carl did but with stainless or ali I use blanket
I guess there are other materials that possibly could be used, whether it works or not I don't know, I guess it may work but may need replacing sooner as it's not specifically designed for the job. There's all sorts of alternative suggestions out there. Some people wrap a layer of wire wool around the perforated tube before packing. This I believe has a negative effect and wont absorb or control the heat. I would have thought it would heat up hotter and if it's a fine enough wire wool 0000 grade with fine enough particles of aluminium oxide it could even catch fire.
The Silent Sport Premium (4 stroke) packing I used is not cheap but is the dogs bollox, and is what all the major exhaust manufacturers like Akra, Yoshi, Arata etc use. This is why I chose it as I wonted them as the manufacture intended. Oh and it's not itchy or irritable to the skin, well...not mine anyway.

Here's one of the articles that convinced me to go for loose fill over the roll.

If you do go down the loose fill route bare in mind you will need around two 500gm bags per a can.

Re: Exhaust Repacking
I picked up a cheap one well two as they normally brake from a odd job shop .leevtr wrote:Decisions decisions...While on the subject, whos got a rivet gun, what one, and any good ? If I'm going to take my cans apart I want to know theyre going back together properly !!
And both are still good !! Only about £3 each

Re: Exhaust Repacking
Thinking about it, its probably better with oval cans to use loose fill as the blanket is going to want to follow the contour of the centre tube, which aint oval .
Carlos....did you get the standard or premium, and where from ?

eBay where else
The seller I bought some from has gone. But there are a couple of others.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silent-Sport- ... 3f3024c8ae
or buy direct from the supplier.

rivet gun...I use the following. It was a little harder to pull with the stainless rivets but worked OK.

and then stainless rivets.
