Off the top of my head (no pun intended) poly carbonated have a 2 or three year life. Multi composite have a 5 year life and carbon fibre is unlimited. As has been mentioned a degree of common sense needs to apply.
If you crash throw it away. Don't let anybody else use it as the internal adapt to there head compromising protection.
The outer shells degrade with uv light. Every crash helmet is dated so you know how lo g you have had it.

The quality of the materials and paint on the suomy is amazing, the arai is great but the sumoy feels extra special inside it, got it dirt cheap for her off a guy who had split with his misses and it had never been used
The arai i got of some bell end that sold it as an RX7 not showing pictures of the back of the helmet when in fact it was a viper gt, still managed get that cheap too so not to bad
My daughters boyfriend had an off in a Suomy, not a major prang just slid off on a wet roundabout shortly after his test. The Suomy side pods jettisoned allowing the visor to fall off. He wasn't impressed with the performance. That was back in 2008.

Going on data and tests your much better off in a cheap Nitro helmet, tried them but the build quality and wind noise was horrible, Sent two back and then got the Arai, had a HJC as well that was a great fit very similar fitting to the Arai
