Mechanical seal

Post by carmanbikes »

Just keeps getting better, Took the crank cases and water pump cover to be powder coated and the water pump bearing got full of beadblast stuff, So ordered a new bearing, oil seal and a mechanical seal but when I collected from Preston Honda the parts guy said don`t touch this with your fingers or any thing like that, Well how do I fit it if I cant touch it anyone any ideas or fitted one, Don't want get it wrong at £43 a time, cant find anything in the manual about it :confused

All it means is you should avoid getting any contamination on the sealing faces. These are manufactured to extremely tight tolerances and to a very accurate degree of flatness, so there is no way for the fluid to leak past the mating faces. Just make sure they are scrupulously clean before fitting as even the oils in your hands could cause small particles of dirt to stick to the faces.

Copied from Wiki.....

Mechanical seal fundamentals.

A mechanical seal must contain four functional components, primary sealing surfaces, secondary sealing surfaces, a means of actuation, and a means of drive:
The primary sealing surfaces are the heart of the device. A common combination consists of a hard material, such as silicon carbide, Ceramic or tungsten carbide, embedded in the pump casing and a softer material, such as carbon in the rotating seal assembly. Many other materials can be used depending on the liquid's chemical properties, pressure, and temperature. These two rings are in intimate contact, one ring rotates with the shaft, the other ring is stationary. These two rings are machined using a machining process called lapping in order to obtain the necessary degree of flatness.
The secondary sealing surfaces (there may be a number of them) are those other points in the seal that require a fluid barrier but are not rotating relative to one another. Usually the secondary sealing elements are o-rings, PTFE wedges or rubber diaphragms.
In order to keep the two primary sealing surfaces in intimate contact, an actuation force is required and is commonly provided by a spring. In conjunction with the spring, it may also be provided by the pressure of the sealed fluid.
The primary sealing surfaces must be the only parts of the seal that are permitted to rotate relative to one another, they must not rotate relative to the parts of the seal that hold them in place. To maintain this non-rotation a method of drive must be provided.

Don't know why that comment was made. It's not like a bulb, alright, lamp, which can be damaged by the oil from your skin etching the coating, and after all coolant has some engine oil in it after a while.... some always leaks past a seal, small amounts, but still, some.
In the absence of knowing this before, I have touched many of these, and nothing dreadful seems to have happened.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks for that Tony, The way he said it in the dealer made it out like it was life or death and I will have to go back and see him again as the bottom of the impeller shaft is quite rusty so need one of them now, Thanks for all the replies

No, it's made of ceramic.
