which reg/rec to buy?
OK so looks like I might need to replace the RR but with which one? Loads on eBay that range from 18 to 56 that to me look the same but no clue on them. Is there a recommended site or seller or type?
Re: which reg/rec to buy?
Mosfet type are the way to go but will cost more.
Cbr125 is straight plug & play.
R1/R6 finned type will work but you need to sort the plug out to fit.

Re: which reg/rec to buy?
i wouldnt get the CBR125 unit because its still a crappy shunt based unit which will eventually fail just the storms OEM unit. the shunt based units run REALLLYYYYY hot and eventually burn themselves out.
what you really want is a MOSFET R/R. i just installed one last week. all thats involved is cutting the current plug that goes into the RR off, and either putting on spade connectors, or you can buy the actual connectors from easternbeaver.com
the crappy shunt based units have an "SH" stamped on them.
the much much better MOSFET units have an "FH" on them. i got mine from a 2007 ZX-14R but there are lots off different mosfet units you can use. theres a list of the compatible ones on post number 6 http://www.superhawkforum.com/forums/kn ... how-25117/

I got this one, dead easy to fit, and works great. it's meant to shut down if it overheats and then just start working again when it cools off.

Re: which reg/rec to buy?
It's a lot bigger then the original, but it just fits inside the seat unit without touching the plastics. Attached with the top bolt only as it needs to sit in line with the subframe and the spacing is different anyway. It is so big and finned, it doesn't rely on the metal to metal with the seat frame to lose heat like the original ones did anyway so it's fine.

Re: which reg/rec to buy?
The one I have is pretty large too. Prolly about the same size, only attaching at the top bolt. Just barley fits inside but that's a lot more surface area for cooling. I used spade connectors for now but I'm gonna get a set of actual connectors from eastern beaver so everything is kosher.

Re: which reg/rec to buy?
Agree but an R1, CBR or equivalent non MOSFET type is a step up, or should I say, step in the right direction from the original non finned VTR one. It depends on how much one wants to spend.i wouldnt get the CBR125 unit because its still a crappy shunt based unit which will eventually fail just the storms OEM unit.

i couldnt agree more! anything is better than the unfinned stocker.cybercarl wrote:Agree but an R1, CBR or equivalent non MOSFET type is a step up, or should I say, step in the right direction from the original non finned VTR one. although my mosfet ZX14 R/R was like $40 USD and the non mosfet "upgrades" you speak of arnt much cheaper so really if you just look for a week or two youll find a good deal on a great unit. mine was used but looked BRAND new.
really happy with it. but yes almost anything = better than OEM unit.
