Wire gauges are too small for the current draw when pumping up large 4x4 tyres. see link http://www.bushranger.com.au/compressor_range.php

these are what i'm talking about. i suggest that you rock up to your nearest 4x4 off road supplier and they should have one for a reasonable price. i've used plenty of plasticky cigarette lighter compressors, they overheat at the compressor cylinder and seize up , wires melt due to the current draw if pumping for more than 5 minutes and they take forever to inflate a 10.5 x 31" off road tyre.

go and get a real man's compressor.

G'day Kit,

If you read the thread fully it's a price thing. Chris is a tight wad & don't want to shell out that much.

Plus he's talking about top ups on his bike tyres not a 4x4, so the cheap option should do fine, although why the lazy git cant use a foot pump is beyond me...

Oh & this is the UK & the ''lets offroad'' gang is a completely different thing over here, whilst you have to avoid Roo's & cross deserts, in the UK your more likely to have to avoid a rambler & an irate Farmer Giles...

G'day Kit,

Mac can talk, just take a look in this thread at which air compressor he bought
I have no problem with spending good money on quality gear, it's cheap and nasty gear that I have a problem with  and our market seems to be full of it.

He is right though about the lack of 4X4 centers around here though, also what I only really need it for, plus the car tyres now and again.

Those 12V air compressors from your link look great and obviously are the boys for bigger tyres than the average car or motorcycle. If one of those RV air compressors for AUD $120 (£64 approx) with 5yrs warranty was available locally I would be very tempted :shh:

This RV air compressor looks a lovely piece of kit:-

I bought a proper compressor like the Aldi one [a bit less power and from from screwfix] 2 yrs ago. its great to have compressed air in the garage :D

I do all my dirt bike tyre changes so that was the main reason, but just having an airline when cleaning things and also running an air impact driver for things like the flywheel nut is a real bonus.

To true Al and that Aldi one is not that expensive. For me though a portable one will suit my needs now,

Bit of an update

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PREMIUM-MINI- ... 19de7eb9a7

This Heyner 12V compressor turns out to have 2yrs warranty, which made me think it must be reasonable for them to cover it for 2yrs. A lot of these in this price range have 12mths warranty. Now that is the good news. Next I contacted Germany to find out if this compressor is made in Germany or a Chinese product. It turns out this compressor "is made in China according to German technical standards". Um not what I was hoping for, but I suppose it's all to do with the cost of labour. If it was made in Germany it would be more expensive I presume.

"is made in China according to German technical standards"
  what the hell does that mean. How about installation standards and quality control.

Come on Chris your going to have to bite the bullet and purchase one or the other soon. I know what's it like though. I have been searching through and researching electric and battery operated rattle guns. I might have to start a thread on it actually.

As I understand it the German company will have a contract with the Chinese manufacturer to produce a product such as this 12V compressor to the German company's specifications. So it should mean it will be to a reasonable standard. If the Chinese company does not keep to the required specifications, then they risk loosing the contract, which of course would not be in their interest. That is how I understand it's meant to work. Whether it does or not, your guess is as good as mine. Although after saying that the Germany company is putting 2 years warranty on this compressor, so they must have confidence in it.

I remember probably 13yrs ago at least, I purchased a Yale lock (a good old quality British product I thought, can't go wrong there). When I got home I noticed it said made in China under licence to Yale 8O I was shocked.

Recently I had a bit of luck regarding tyre pumps. I have been trying to repair my old 12V compressor which at first I didn't think could be stripped down. After quite a few attempts I have now got that working, although not tested it on the car tyres yet. Even so I am intending to replace it, as it is getting on now and probably won't last.

Good luck with your rattle gun, I'm guessing you want that to change your VTR flywheel

When I worked at British Bakeries the guys looking after the fleet of 7.5 ton & artics used a Makita rattle gun for their rattle gun needs.

Seemed to stand up to he use & abuse quite well...
