wanna replace my fairings and...

Post by Jscobey »

my farings are pretty shot at this point. PO i guess was in the habbit of over tightening all the fasteners on the farings and cracking them in every spot there is a fastener. when i got it, it had would looked like silicone or something on all the cracks. anyways since i had one small lowside that compounded the issue. so at some point in the future, when the budget allows, i wanna get the storm looking as good as she rides.

its a shame because i take so much pride in my bike and love what its become, yet she looks like a beater because of the fairings, not to mention the DIY paint job she has. so i wanna replace the whole lot.

my question is which route to go.

1. buying a set of the chinese ebay fairings for around $400 usd. seems like a failry reasonable price for a whole set. a buddy of mine bought a set for his 900rr and they are stunningly well built and look amazing! wondering if anyone has had any expierience with the storm fairings from fleabay? they come in white which is nice, the issue is getting my gas tank and lower to match them.

2. buy a front racing fairing without the hole for the headlight, and just strip all the rest of my farings and repaint to match. the front fairing is what has the most damagage. the rest is mostly just poorly painted. my question here is has anyone had success mounting 1 or 2 small bright lights underneath where the stock headlight would go on a race front? i cant rmemeber where but i did see someone with this set up on a red storm. the lights were small but semmed like they would provide plenty of light. as least as much as the stocker. i do need a headlight so even tho i like the look it might not be the best option if i cant get ample night time visiability.

3. if anyone has had major issues and wasted the money on the chinese storm farings, then shelling out the dough for a set from sharkskinz or the like. although this is a MUCH more expensive route.

what have you mates done when replacing fairings?

You want to have a word with Seb ( seb421 ) as he bought and fitted Chinese Repsol fairing kit to his Firestorm, the one he bought was very good. But beware the quality is not the same from all apparently.

Are you sure your existing bodywork cannot be repaired.

Another quality fairing seems to be the Mario Nava fairing, again not cheap, but you get what you pay for I guess.

IIRC it was Sem-moto or Selena-moto or something like that who Seb purchased his fairing from. But yes Chinese stuff like anything from over there can be a bit hit and miss.

Things are up in the air with the tooling and moulds :shh:

in regards to my fairing be saved, its got so many cracks. every hole where a bolt goes through has some sort of crack emanating from it. the left side frame mount whole is basically non existant and shattered beyond repair from my crash, on of the rear mounts where the rear cowl attatches to the sub frame is compltley sheared off. add in the shotty spray job and its more trouble then its worth.

part of me doesnt really mind it. shes a 10 footer. she looks great from 10 feet away. but then again i take pride in my bike and want the fairings to refelct it. my only issue with forking over any sort of cash for a new set is if i ever crash then im toast. id prolly save my current fairings for the track though.

i think im going to try and see if i can salvage my current set. do a complete strip down and fix whatever cracks i can. then prep and paint. we will see how things turn out. prolly gonna keep her white :D thought about black but it would just be too black with the wheels and everything. ill update you guys with how it goes

Hi Jscobey, I would suggest 1 layer of woven fibreglass epoxied on the inside of the fairing and that includes over the mounting holes and tabs. Redrill the mounting holes, and respray and you should have a fairing that should be stronger than stock. Cheaper IMHO. The most expensive part would be the respray me thinks.
