Just bought a great second hand 97 VTR 1000. Exellent condition and really enjoying the ride, although thats not difficult here in sunny Cape Town.
Only problem being that this machine was imported via a cycle shop direct from Japan and is thus governed to 180 Kph as per jap road rules. Usually when this hapens a speedo with the lower reading is fitted but not in this case, can any one please advise how to remove this governor.
Help!! VTR with Speed limiter
I'm sure it's something to do with a restrictor plate over the carbs but don't quote me on this. I am sure that there was something on here about it a few weeks ago.

Might be worth a look. Don't worry if this isn't it though cos someone who knows what they are talking about will be along in a minute

Re: Help!! VTR with Speed limiter
I know from my friends in Russia (where they have a loads of grey import bikes) that restriction on Japan VTR is in electronics in instruments cluster and in ignition module.Phil Goodson wrote:Just bought a great second hand 97 VTR 1000. They say it is quite tricky to de-restrict (easy job, but need to know "which wire" etc. Their bikes been derestricted by local bike shop, but guy did not want to share his knowledge...
So - it is not just mechanically restricted...
Also - they told me that derestricted VTR feels miles better than restricted one, even before 180 speed. So - may be you can just replace ingnition module with european one? Will try to ask them more...
